So I am sitting here in Vegas at a casino yesterday and was talking to the Blackjack dealer about the fight. ESPN was running something about it in the background so it came up.
The dealer was a pretty knowledgeable fight guy. As we are talking another player pipes up with how McGregor will win. Claimed he had been training for this "longer than anyone thinks". To which we simply pointed out Mayweather has been training for this his ENTIRE CAREER! Oh no you don't understand, McGregor USED to box! Obviously our point was Mayweather has boxed for DECADES! He took solace in the "fact" that he has undisclosed information about the contract Floyd signed. Claims that the rematch clause is intact and that it will be in the octagon. Claims he HAS to fight McGregor and has a legal right to REQUIRE him to do so, that is why he took the match in the first place and Dana White is brilliant yada yada yada. When he was pressed on how he came about the information if it was still "undisclosed" and all his answer was that his "girlfriend works for Dana White and she saw the contract". HILARIOUS!!! If ANY of this comes to pass nobody will be more shocked than I.

TKO by Mayweather in round 10. Absolutely respectable fight by McGregor considering so many people didn't think he would be able to even land a punch. Commentators that I've read gave McGregor several early rounds.

"In the 10th round of a surprisingly well-matched fight, Mayweather backed McGregor onto the ropes with a series of rights and lefts. McGregor’s face was completely bloodied. He was about to fall through the ropes, and the referee stepped in to stop the fight with 1:55 remaining in the round."

I was following a few of the live sites reporting on the fight minute by minute, and it sounded like it was surprisingly good. Well, to be honest, I was expecting a decent fight. So I wasn't that surprised myself.

McGregor was gassed after 6. His mouth was open and breathing heavy. Obviously Mayweather was playing the long game.
The amazing thing to me is the arena was empty. I saw entire sections vacant! The other thing I found interesting was how many people were able to get free tickets in one way or the other. I was all proud and thought I was a genuine big deal being offered the seats, but it seems that is not as big a feat as I thought. Though I am certain they still cleared mountians of cash. T-Mobile arena is a great facility as a side note. Often these events fill in after the under card but not this one. Fight went pretty much as expected by most. Almost exactly. McGregor was looking to finish early with that left, and Floyd was waiting until he was gassed and hitting him pretty much at will. Obviously in an octogan things would be the exact opposite and perhaps even MORE of a miss match.

Well, I had a fun bet on the Irish fellow to win in round 3 and after round 3 it was not much fun for me.

I didn't watch, only listened to the play by play thing, but I kept waiting for McGregor to kick.
I would think out of habit it may have crossed his mind. Tom

Interesting that one COULD make money betting on Mayweather. All you had to do was sit next to die hard McGregor fans who were looking for an upset. Then have him have a pretty good first couple rounds and you can't stop them from betting!

Fight went pretty much as expected by most?
It seems the conventional wisdom was that McGregor would badly embarrass himself but it seems he did just the opposite. I'm not a huge fight fan but I've seem my fair share of pro fights. I don't think I've ever really seen the tactic used by Mayweather to turn his back on McGregor in the middle of a fight. Certainly not to the degree that Mayweather used it. Mayweather looked amazing in the later rounds when he was just destroying McGregor. |

Which is exactly what was expected "by most". You left that out for whatever reason. McGregor was expected to gas out about 6. He did exactly that.
I don't think conventional wisdom was he would embarrass himself as much as he simply had no real chance of winning. He went a round longer than I thought.

Pretty predictable result. I thought it would end in the 8th; it actually went into the 10th. McGregor won a few rounds, but Mayweather wasn't trying to win rounds 1-3. It wasn't the most impressive possible win for Mayweather, but he's always been about taking the most likely path to victory, and that was it. Solid effort by McGregor, but he was never in any danger of winning the fight. Hard to imagine anyone making a pro debut could have done better.
The difference between them is that after three rounds, McGregor probably thought he was winning, and Mayweather *knew* he was winning. I suspect the fight was 100% exactly as had been envisioned by Mayweather.

You're right, probably most people expected Mayweather to win so I apologize. What I was saying was that most people didn't expect Mcgregor to have as good a showing as he did. |

It was obvious early on that McGregor was not going to knock out Mayweather. McGregors form sucked, he was arm punching and not putting his body behind his punches. McGregor looked winded after 3 rounds.
You could definitely see ring rust from the long layoff Mayweather had. McGregor did better than expected. |
