I need to know how to arrange or set up my Mental Photography deck. I got it on Fri. 5/26/17 from Haines House of Cards in Norwood (Cincinnati) Ohio. I've monkeyed with it over the weekend and can't do much with it as I think I've gotten the cards 'out of order'. One YouTube video shows "short card/long card" as the set up...but this only goes so far. I've always got one card showing a color and number.
Manipulating a deck, any deck, is really hard for me. I've got big hands...maybe that's my problem. Anyway,, I've purchased a few tricks lately and am losing interest fast. I find it like trying to learn the guitar....I just never could get the hang of it even after an entire year of practice and lessons..so.. I quit it.

We don't discuss secrets openly in this forum. Once you have 50 posts, you can view the secret forums where methods are discussed more freely. In the meantime, you may be able to find some help with your deck via private messages, or you could call the shop where you bought it and they may be able to help you.
To offer more general advice, though some good information is on YouTube, you'd be better served getting your lessons either from a professional directly or from professionally written books (or even professionally produced DVDs), because despite some good stuff being on YouTube, a lot more of it is just really really bad (and often uploaded without the permission of the creators). In terms of hand size, that can make a difference, but I can guarantee that you will be able to do most magic regardless of hand size. You just may need to practice and experiment a little to make things fit your hands properly (and it may not be exactly the same in your hands as in someone else's). But if you do stick with it and keep practicing, I guarantee you'll get the hang of it eventually. If you can find a local mentor, the process will probably be faster, but no matter what your approach to learning, these things will take some time. You can master some tricks relatively quickly, but many of the people here have DECADES of practice behind them, and are still learning, so it's definitely a life-long process.

Yeah... a mentor is needed. I live in a small town in the sticks...nothing close at all. I've watched the You Tube videos but it's like you said...they leave a lot to be desired. I thought about going to the SAM/IBM convention in Louisville as that's only about 1.5 hrs. from me, but..I'm guessing a newbie would be pretty much on the "outside" as far as being shown/taught much. The Louisville venue is an easy drive from my house in IN.

I think you'd be surprised how welcoming groups of magicians can be. I've never attended the IBM/SAM convention, so I can't speak to it in particular, but in general I've found more experienced magicians are always willing to help. They won't part with secrets lightly, but they'll gladly help you with stuff you already know and are working on (and to help point you toward what books are worth studying and what props are worth buying). You might feel a bit on the outside because it's a pretty small community and everyone often seems to know everyone else, but I think you'd find them welcoming and start feeling on the inside pretty quick.
You may also check and see if IBM and/or SAM have a group that meets in your area (or even if there's just a group of magi who sometimes gather informally). If you're in the sticks, you'd probably have to drive to the nearest big city, but there's probably something not too far. Depending on your budget, there are some magicians that give lessons via Skype, or if you have a travel budget, you could try one of Jeff McBride's classes in Las Vegas where you'll study with some expert teachers and students of all levels (but those don't come cheap). And in the meantime, though we don't share secrets publicly here, there's a lot of advice to be had from the people here, too. It's well worth sticking around and reading through a bunch of the old threads.

My nearest SAM is Queen City Mystics in Cincinnati, OH. I've been to the meeting place once to buy tricks... it's 1:10 ONE WAY from my house. Love my country peace and quiet...but getting "up town" is a hassle at times !! (no one to try tricks on but the wife...no kids for us and I'm a loaner by nature and self-employed..so no work friends either.)

If you continue to have trouble manipulating the deck you might want to try buying an Invisible Deck which uses one of the same principles but is a little simpler to learn to perform well.

They might also be some local clubs outside of SAM or IBM that might help you or you might even meet someone that live close to you and you can get together on occasions. Travelling 1h10 mins is not so bad to support something you love doing... Good luck!

Friend Deek;
On June 1, replying to your post looking for help with the Mental Photography Deck (commonly known as the Nudist Deck) Robert Lewis Jr, among many things, talked briefly about BUYING P R O P S. On Aug 15, among other things, I explained that you CANNOT BUY TRICKS. You can only buy PROPS OR SECRETS On Aug 17, among other things, I explained that, "it aint TRICKS, IT'S PRESENTATION THAT MAKES THE PERFORMANCE OF A TRICK, ENTERTAINING. Magic is not inherently entertaining. Magic is 5%sleight of hand skills, 5% sensory illusion, 5% esoteric principles of science, and 85% PRESENTATION. I am extremely busy, mentoring two young high school lads, and, I really don't have the time to remind you about what I already explained. The Tarbell Course is now available FREE (pdf) When I was 15, I studied the entire course. I learned PRINCIPLES! What I learned, helped me to make a living with magic! I strongly suggest that you go back and read my posts, and Robert Lewis' posts AGAIN, AND AGAIN. AT 85, I just don't have the time or the energy to explain things TWICE.

Hopefully someone has helped you through a PM already but you want to set up all the cards printed face to printed face. Does that make sense? In that set up you should be able to fan the cards in either direction and see all blank cards. Cutting to a printed face card, sets up the deck for you to be able to riffle through the cards, Svengali style, and show an entire deck of printed cards.
Do you have a Svengali deck? |
