Aw, Harry, you are far too kind!
However, it appears that you have forgotten I don’t make a secret of being an unpublished amateur. Like many here, I love magic and have no desire to try to make a living from performing. Thanks for your effusive praise, though! Patrick |

Nowhere near as kind as you. No; I didn't forget - I realize that making a living from performing is not within your "area" so you just give great advice to others who can't make a living from performing. I'm certain that they are all thankful for your "effusive" advice. Keep up the good work - we all breathlessly await your next "piece of wisdom."

There is a huge difference between “can’t” and “don’t want to.” My understanding from past discussions is that you have made your living more from memory material than from card magic. There is no doubt that you could have made a living from performing card tricks, but I suspect the memory books and seminars were a more profitable way to go. I can respect that choice. But I don’t for a moment assume that when someone does not desire to make a living performing magic that he or she is incapable.
This has been a very pleasant exchange, Harry. All the best to you! Patrick |

Patrick: Obviously you're correct re: my "career." Magic is my first love, and it's part of what "shoved" me into the "memory" field. There really is no comparison. Let me brag a bit - the most I was ever paid for, say, a magic lecture, was $5000.00, and that was unusual. Usually, over the decades, it was in the hundreds not the thousands - I most often did a magic lecture when the group knew I'd be there for a "memory" appearance so that I would accept their "budget" since I was there anyway (like in Australia) and because I liked to do 'em...ego feeding...and the only extra they'd need to pay was my extra overnight stay, etc.
In magic a best-selling book is a few thousand copies. My books on memory training have sold about TWENTY MILLION copies. Plus the advance is/was (I "ain't" doin' anymore) between $100,000 and $200,000.) And re: fees: Before I basically retired my fee for an appearance or for a seminar (or both - appearance after dinner the night before; seminar to teach some of the stuff they saw me do the next day) was - for just one, appearance or seminar, $15,000.00 plus all first class expenses west of the Mississipi; $12,500.00 plus first class expenses east of the Mississippi. If the corporation wanted both - after dinner appearance/show and seminar, we worked it out accordingly. So, yes, quite a difference between my two areas of expertise.

Obviously those you mention, Mark, are not to be considered "no good." That's obvious. But your remark made me stop and think for a minute or three. And, can't help it, but the response to your question/statement has to be: considering each area to be a full-time/lifetime occupation, if the individual realized that he or she could make a much, MUCH, better living, much, MUCH, more money doing magic - then yes, it'd seem silly not to "desire making a living doing magic."
Hey, I may be wrong (I sure as heck have been wrong before!), but seems obvious to me. My first love, without doubt, is card magic. But then I realized that I could make MUCH more money (see post above) doing my memory work - no magic at all -- so, again obviously, that's what I did. It would have been idiotic for me to do otherwise.

Good reply.
Elmsley was one that was disappointed of how little certain great magicians were able to earn. I read this in Stephen Minch's book. And therefore he decided to stick to his job in the computer area. Mark |

Harry - don't get wound up mate.
The trolls on here are probably in their late 20's/30's; still live at home with their parents; mope around the house all day in their dressing-gown (when they finally venture out of their back bedroom to dispose of half a dozen empty KFC buckets); have online 'relationships' with potential Thai brides and, most importantly, have never performed card magic, for money, in that thing called the 'Real World'. They wouldn't recognise commercial card magic, even if it crawled up their inside leg and bit them on the bollox.

Who are the trolls on this thread, Merc? I hope you're not including me in that assessment
