I have a long, fun magic coloring book routine I do, and in it, the kids take color from behind their ears and their shirts and throw it up (the mis, hit me in the eye, blah blah blah). After doing this several times, I am still not sure what age groups I should be doing and not doing this for. Before I do it, I am always a bit affraid the older kids will think its dumb, or the younger ones might not get it. What are your views?

In my opinion, the coloring book is o.k. for younger kids around ages 6 & younger. Older kids seem to think it's a dumb trick!

Thank you, before this, I couldn't figure out the line. What would a good subsitute be for older kids? I have a rope routine but I'm not sure the younger kids would get many of the punch lines.
Thanks for all the terrific help guys!

The coloring book is one of those tricks which defies logic. MY logic anyway. I....hate, hate, HATE this stupid cheesey obvious effect!!!! But the kids (the 3-7 crowd specificaly) LOVE it! It has NEVER failed to get laughs, astonished looks and applause. I know there are a lot of effects out there like this one...that is, effects which many magicians hate and/or beleive are way overdone/overexposed, but they remain huge hits with the spectators. Dale Carnigie once said "I love strawberry shortcake, but fish, for some strange reason, seem to prefer worms. So when I go fishing, do I bait my hook with a slice of strawberry shortcake? Or a worm?"
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

I have adults come up to me and say "how on earth did you do that colouring in book trick". I know someone who did the colouring in book at a church and people complained that he was doing real magic I find the older kids don't like it that much not because it's obvious, but because they don't want to be associated with 'colouring in' - that's for 'kids'.
I've thought to adapt mine and put pictures of myself and friends etc. - like a photo album. Show the photo album to the kids, but the pictures are missing etc. That way you can personalize it a bit if you're tired of the standard book. |

You can use the coloring book for older kids, but you have to change the presentation of it. With older kids (ie. older than 9 or 10) you would want to present it more as a demonstration effect than a participation effect. It's not the trick that they feel is dumb, it's the participation element that they can no longer get into.

Seek out a copy of the May 2001 Linking Ring Magazine. The Hocus Pocus Parade for that issue is a KidAbra KidShow Parade. One of the routines in there is Max Howard's presentation of Max's Magic Coloring Book.
You must read this routine! It is pure theatre, and perfect for all ages. You could even present the coloring book to a group of adults with this routine. - Donald

I think Taneous's idea of adapting the colouring book is a good idea. There are all sorts of possibilities that could appeal to all ages. I've adapted one that has different numbers on the pages for use in a 'maths' style magic show. Give the kids a sum to work out and if they're right all the pages have the right answer. If they're wrong all the pages have a large 'X' on them. Due to the workings of the book I can have three or four different 'correct answer' numbers for different sums.

Or you could replace it with a similar but not identical effect. I would suggest the "Stamp Album" trick. Uses the same principle, so it's the perfect "substitute" trick, but the effect of having vanished stamps reappear inside the album is both magicical, yet sensible.

I liked the idea from taneous about the photo album. You could start with blank or sketches, go to black and white, go to color photos, change sizes, etc.
When you start to think about it there are so many possibilities. A homework book that fills out the answers magically, Address books that change based on what you are looking for, A book that changes stories and then when your parent is looking becomes a "respectable" book like a text book, and then changes back when they are gone to x-men or some comic. Wow this is a great idea. - Brian Nadworny

I have designed a show with very visual and strong magic that appeals to the adults and children...
I do about the same magic for the kids as I do for the adults but I just change the copy. I think magicians rely on the BOX way too much.. Paper bags, coke bottle, spoons etc things that look natural are the best tricks... IF you have a box and make something dissapear, does the audinace think.. If I had that box, Can I do that too..????

Years ago instead of a coloring book we had a stamp album (remember when?) It was the same basic trick. You vanished loose stamps into a simple paper cone and they appeared already glued into a previously empty album. I think this would work with older kids especially if you used something like some of the popular collector cards the kids seem to love. Yu Gi Oh or Pokemon, etc.

YES I do remember the stamp album.. AWESOME.. people can relate to this items.. Since it does not look mass produced... I once saw a magican do somthing simular with 10 seprate pictures that he flung through showing them all to be blank... and then had pictures on them then colors... very nicely done,, he did not use a binder or a book cover just lose.. very nice.. Cheers Curtis

For older kids 12 and up I use the "around the world" coloring book. I don't use it as a coloring book though. It is actually mentalism effect. The youth holds the book open to a page and I can tell them what they are looking at... a fish, a flower, a plane, etc.

There are plans to make the stamp book in the Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. It is very simple using cheap photo album. My 7 year old son and I made it together.
We used stickers instead of stamps, they make more sense to children today. I think it would play just as well as the commercially available colouring book. |

Sticker albums is a great idea. I'll have to have a think about that.
What about flip books. (Like cardtoon but a booklet). You could flip through and have a short flip animation with 2 or 3 different endings? Flip it first time magician walks in and pulls a turkey out of a hat, second flip rabbit walks in pulls magician out of hat, third time it goes right..something like that? George |

Cool ideas George. I only use the colouring book for colouring book monte now.
Do you agree that the word 'Magic' on the books pre-empts the kids? Matt |

magicgeorge Inner circle Belfast 4299 Posts |
LOL, Um, they're watching Magic Matt do his Magic Show so I think they know somthing magic is going to happen.
What it might do though, is make them think it's the book that does the magic not yourself.(Which is fairly true but we don't want the LDs to know that). So I think you have a point about the word "Magic" being on the book but for slightly different reasoning. Something that looked more like a genuine colouring book might be better but I don't think these little subtleties really do matter a great deal. George |

It's Mad Matt now hehe. What I'm saying is they know the book is not a normal colouring book because it says magic.

I don't really think it matters that is says Magic on the book. Just show them it's a real coloring book by showing all the black and white pictures.
