Tony Curtis just did a two-day event at the Magic Castle, where he talked about his new autobiography on Saturday, and answered questions, and then on Sunday hosted a showing of his movie Houdini and talked about it and answered questions.
He was a very gracious subject and made clear his love for the Magic Castle and magic in general. Click here to view attached image. |

Didn't Steve Martin do a great 'magician skit' on Carson once too?

I've been fortunate to see Paul Gertner perform most of those routines in person. A wonderful magician and a nice guy. And boy do I miss Johnny!

Vandy,
Whenever I look at a list like that my eye start to roll up into my head like a couple of Ban Roll-on applicators. Thanks for pointing that out.

Otto Wessely appeared on Carson (I still have the little sign off the dressing room door with Otto's name on it).
I was booked to be on, but when they called for me to come to the studio I was out of town and got the message on my answering machine two days late. Argh.... what happened they booked another magician, who Johnny wound up not liking. Unfortunately if they call you and you don't show... you get knocked off the list. Oh, well, I probably would have been too nervous and would have blown it.

If memory serves me correctly, Burt Reynolds sawed Johnny in half using a thin model sawing.

When I was called to do my last appearance with Johnny, just before his retirement, I mentioned that I was looking at the picture on my wall of me and Johnny, when he was still working out of NYC, probably around 1964. We both had black hair and a lot of it. The talent co-ordinator asked me to bring it with me. I did. He also asked me if I knew how many times I'd done the show; I didn't know. They checked it, and Johnny mentioned it during my appearance - 23 times. He also showed that photo of us from all those years ago. Then he said, "Let's pose the same way." We did. I have the two photos in one frame - they're about thirty years apart. The latest one we both have white hair and not too much of it!
Johnny was a good friend. When I was preparing a TV infomercial for my memory product I asked if I could use a 30-second piece from that last appearance of mine on the infomerical - where he said the word "amazing" six times. He said you can use as much of the appearance as you like - no charge. (I found out later that his company (run by his son-in-law) charged $30,000.00 for running a one-minute appearance! You can see my piece, cut down quite a bit, if you go to my website - I think that address is listed below. Anyway, just wanted to record a bit of my experience with one hell of a nice guy. HL.

Why don't they issue all the clips from the Carson archives?
Couldn't take more than a couple weeks to get them all on a DVD.
So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark — that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

What about Orson Bean?
A previous post mentioned Mike Skinner doing Dingles Roll Over Aces. He might have performed that, but what I remember Mike doing was the Invisible Palm. Garry Hayes |
