I experienced this problem back when I was doing it, that's how I knew. I suppose an itr could be employed. But that would add to the expense of the effect.

My memory is getting bad, but I recall Doug doing it with a half dollar. Again I may be wrong but I am almost sure it was a half.
I had it and sold it on Ebay, it is still very affordable though. Rennie
The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......

Right, my problem is getting the nickel from my wrist to my palm without it looking contrived. I'm looking for ways to do it with as little movement possible.

I do it with a jubmo 5 lb. morgan dollar. It plays to a much bigger audience that way.

I do it with manhole covers and invisible steel cable, not that I'm bragging or anything. Here is a picture of me trying to teach the effect to another magician.

Is this an earlier effect by John Cornelius? Magic Warehouse, MJM Magic and Penguin Magic don't have it..

This is indeed by John Cornelius. It is available from him. It is also listed and available at Bob Solari's gmrcreations.com for $12.00. I got mine years ago from Daytona Magic (a quick check of their site indicates they no longer sell it.) The other approach to getting this is to obtain the Ammar dvd noted above and make one up yourself. It's a great trick once you get it down...just watch your angles and avoid getting tangled up!

Thanks elbruno for the great info - I'll check into Bob Solari's website as well as Ammar DVD.

You may probably get the special coin at Sasco coin Magic. They have just about any gimmicked coin that is in existence at decent prices.

But he learned it from a man called Arthur Sanders. Nordnes made it known, at that time, when he published it in the German periodical "Magie" in the mid thirties. And that predates mr. Cornelius with about 40 years... T. Nordnes was also the editor of the Norwegian magazine "Magikeren" from 1928 to 1956, and he may have published it there. The greatest exponent for the (original) effect today is Finn Jon, who learned it from Nordnes in the fifties. Finn is usually prepared to do it at "the drop of a hat", which explains why Jon Racherbaumer saw him do it in an elevator in Toronto... Bjørn Johansen

Bjorn, correct me if I am wrong, but judging by the time frame, my guess is Sanders, and Nordes who published this in the mid thirties, although using the same handling, must have done this with a long human hair, like Hummer did around the same time with his card trick. Today's fibers that are more sturdy, more invisible, and can handle heavier, non-hollow coins, were not available back in the day.

This is also written up in the John Cornelius book "The Award Winning Magic of John Cornelius."
Does it make more sense to buy/learn this from John than Ammar? Or if John didn't really create it, does it matter at all where you learn it? Just wondering. |
