Instructions, with pictures, for shooting a rubber band out onto the floor and having it roll back to you, are on my web page at http://home.ICX.net/~doncox
In the index, click on Boomerang. This effect was shown to me in 1979 by Ron Estes of Nashville, TN. Ron gave me permission to make it available to magicians. Contact me if you have any problems with it. Don Cox dmcox@hotmail.com |

Thanks Don, though isn't this dangerous there is a post in the beginners section about them being banned in a school and you are teaching people to shoot them! Something to play with at work this I think (beats working!)

Just for completeness sake, this looks like the exact method taught in Chris Kenner's "Band across the Globe" booklet. If Ron showed it to you in 1979, I think it predates Kenner's publication by a good number of years.
I can't seem to find my copy right now. It would be interesting to see Chris' "credits" section.

Regarding Dave VanVranken's post on Kenner's booklet, I believe the version Kenner published is a different version which I showed to Dan Garrett years ago and gave him permission to have published. I consider that method to be harder than the method on my web page. It was also published in the Linking Ring magazine sometime in 1979 or 1980. If I get time in the next few days, I will make a short video clip of the setup and band propelling and put it on my webpage. Give me a week or slightly more, please. I am going to the Winter Carnival of Magic tomorrow and will be indeposed for a few days.

As far as the originator of this stunt...
I heard a great story which attributes it to Michael Weber. It started as a "tall tale" that was told to Vernon. He didn't believe it was possible, and then Weber took the time to devise a method. I ain't gonna take time to tell the story, because it isn't mine to tell. Pretty Funny though, seeing how it started as a prank. WIllie |

I heard the tall tale (not the effect)was credited to Slydini, as told by Cellini in his book "The Royal Touch."

I read a post somewhere on this forum that someone first saw it in a Mexican bar back in the 1920's, so my conclusion is that it has been passed down by word of mouth for as long as there have rubber bands. As I recall they did the cup and ball routine in the court of Egyptian Kings several thousand years ago.

I can do it providing I am using a thick band. Tried it with a whimpy green band and it was hard. Thanks for this cool piece!

Paul Daniels teaches it on his "Inner Secrets of Professional Magic" DVD.
I don't know what others think of that DVD, I got it as part of a set of Paul Daniels DVD's and video's and I quite like it. It also shows Crazy Man's Handcuffs, The Classic Force, Classic Force behind back, Some Rope stuff, and some sleights like Color Changes and his double lift, amongst others. It may be fond memories of his TV show but I really like Paul Daniels. -MagicMarker |
