Can anyone offer some history or background of Matt Schulien?

There is stuff you can do a search on here at the Café.
Anything inparticular? The bar was originally on Halstead in Chicago before they made the move to the popular location on Irving Park Road near Damen Ave.
Matt was a great entertainer. Besides doing the card stuff, he was a great practical joker and would do some funny stuff at the restaurant to entertain the patrons. I believe it was Matt's father that opened the first bar.
I never met Mat, but I knew Charlie and Ed Schulien. Met then around 1971 or so. At the time they both were entertaining at the restaurant. A few years later, Ed dropped out and Charlie continued on until his death several years ago.

One of the greatly overlooked works, is:
*The Magic of Matt Schulien*
a book published by Magic Inc. and written by Phil Willmarth.
It is filled with incredible interesting stories re Matt, lots of pictures and also covers a chapter with a lot of other well known barmagicians, like Hebba Habba Al, Eddie Fechter, Frank Everhart, Don Alan, Chuck Morris, yes, even Hebba Habba Als *Sugar-cube*-trick (routine) is described within this book..
200 pages, first printing 1959, second edition 1976.
It is one of my favourite books in magic and worth to read and rearead many times..
Don't know if it still is available, IF it is, get it, anybody interested in magic should read it 
Learn a few things well.....this life is not long enough to do everything.....
( Words of wisdom from Albert Goshman ...it paid off for him - it might
as well for YOU!!!- My own magic is styled after that motto... )

You might still be able to get a copy of that book.
I have fond memories of that place. Worked the back room.
A person you might want to contact is Al James. He was
a regular there. In fact everytime we ever worked there
he was there.

I'm currently re-reading this book and I must also agree that it is a must have of you are interested in historical aspects of Magic.
One question though... Does anyone know if any video footage of Matt exists?

I had the priviledge of meeting and seeing Matt Schulien perform at Schulien's on Irving Park Road in 1965.
That man knew how to ENTERTAIN his customers and show them a good time. That experience of meeting and seeing Matt perform forever changed my approach to performing magic.
And last Labor Day Weekend, I had the honor and priviledge of being the opening entertainer in the "Magic of Matt Schulien" All-Star Closeup Show at the Annual Houdini Club of Wisconsin Convention.
It was a thrill for me to entertain in that close-up segment, along with Bob Schulien, Bill Weimer, and Al James.
