The following is my review of Jason Wethington's "Tied" DVD for The Magic Café:
"The other day I received Jason Wethington's "Tied" DVD in the mail. The material that Jason offers on his "Tied" DVD are not mere effects, but rather Performance Pieces that will be welcomed additions to any professional's arsenal. All of the material presented is truly audience-tested, and perfected in the "real-world". How do I know? Because Jason and I have been hired to perform at the same corporate events numerous times over the past 10 years, and I have seen these routines grow from "an interesting idea" to well thought-out pieces that get amazing audience reactions. The details for this DVD: Giggle Coins Across - A very "move-efficient" Coins Across routine. The interesting thing about this routine is that your hands never come close to each other when the first AND second coin go across - wait until you see the sleight used! Also, the ending is very visual and happens in the spectator's hands. Great for walk-around performances. 2003 3&3 - Another "Coins Across" routine that can be performed either for walk-around or in a more formal setting. A kicker on this routine is that 3 coins go across at the same time - when your hands don't come close to each other AND the spectators are holding your wrists. CST - This is a 2-coin Copper & Silver routine that is very interactive with the audience and all of the magic happens in the spectator's hands. The last transposition is extremely visual. Great for walk-around. Pen and Drink Routine - Attention all restaurant workers- This routine alone is worth the price of the DVD. Imagine being able to produce the spectator's drink in your hands in the middle of a well-choreographed Coin & Pen routine. This effect is the one your audience will be talking about for weeks after your performance & also the routine that will get you private bookings. Again, how do I know? When Jason and I work together, I see the reactions and responses from the audience when Jason performs this routine. Who Wants To Be The Firebug - The ONLY pen-thru-coin routine I perform. I've been performing this since 1999, when Jason first gave me permission to use it. This has always been one of my favorite routines to perform. Very well thought-out. Oil and Water - A multi-phase Oil and Water routine with a great story-line that engages the audience, and keeps them entertained. I'm glad Jason finally released this handling, so I can finally start using it... It is based on the Oil and Water routines of both Chad Long and Rene Levand. Eat More Popcorn - A great card routine for formal shows, that not only entertains but educates the audience on the topic of subliminal advertising. This is an easy-to-do routine, that also plays BIG. Okito Box Routine - Another effect that has it's roots in a Chad Long effect. Jason's handling of this four coin Okito Box routine is (as per usual with Jason's routines..) very well thought-out and the kicker ending is amazing. This routine was a HUGE hit at the TSD Convention in New Orleans last year. The Gambler's Cards Across - A great Cards Across routine that incorporates the Gambler's Cop sleight. The second-phase of this routine really gets the audience reactions that we are all hoping for. OVERALL - A well produced DVD by Will Cobble that showcases some of Jason Wethington's routines that he has been performing for the past decade. If you are interested in walk-around, or restaurant-work material, then this DVD is a must have. All of the performances take place on-location in real-world settings - various restaurants, bars, Cafés, and even a magic shop. There are also Extra Features that have Audio Commentary by Jason Wethington & Will Cobble, and a Behind The Scenes Featurette. If I were you, I would contact my favorite magic dealer and order this DVD today... Because that's exactly what I did last week and I am very happy with my decision. Enjoy this DVD and the magic of Jason Wethington!" All the best, Ryan Swigert |

Hey guys just to let you know there was a problem during duplication. 15 seconds of video were dropped during the explanation of the striking vanish in the effect "Pen and Drink". If you have any questions contact us through the web site.

I was going to ask how the quality of the DVD was but if 15 seconds of the explanation of an effect is missing and was not caught prior to it being released for sale I would be relunctant in purchasing it. Will a corrected DVD be released shortly? If so, I would consider purchasing it if the overall video and sound quality are good. I would appreciate anyone's opinion whoi actually purchased and viewed this DVD as to the video and sound quality of the performances and the explanations.
Best regards, Michael

I agree with you and we are working out the details right now. Again the problem was during duplication, it was sent straight to the distributor from there. We reviewed the DVD in it's entirety BEFORE it went to the duplication house and it was fine. We stand behind our product 100% and are making every effort to correct the problem. Again sorry for the inconvenience.

No problem Jason... I still have mine on order, whether or not that vanish is cut short. Also, that particular vanish is so widely taught throughout magic literature that I am sure anyone needing instruction on the move can find it on one of their other videos or books. Keep up the good work.

Michael -
The video & sound of the performances and explanations are top notch. The 15-second video gap is not an issue with learning the effect that is being taught when it happens. Ryan Swigert |

True the vanish is taught and available throughout the literature. The audio is still on the DVD so you can hear me explaining the mechanics of the move. We felt that the you , the consumer, should be aware of the problem and that we should be the ones to inform you of it. We are working on a solution that will make everyone happy.
Sincerely, DVA |

Thanks Simon,
I appreciate the comments. We had a phenomenal director/producer who put together the funding for the project. If you watch the Backstage featurette you will see possibly the largest set that has ever been used on an instructional magic DVD. Thanks again for your purchase, DVA |

DVA,
Thank you very much for your honest explanation for the error in the duplication process. Considering your explanation and the good reviews by people who have seen the DVD, I will order it. Thank you again. Best regards, Michael

I just received this DVD and was wondering if anyone else has problems with the video cutting out? through out the DVD the screen goes black and at one point the sound is either behind or ahead of the action. The extra features on mine doesn't work at all. Most of these problems are during the explanations. Anyone else have these problems?
Thanks, Joe

I didn't care for this DVD that much. The presentations were so low key. The magic was totally undersold and stilted. The tricks were mediocre -- if you've been doing magic for more than a few years, you've probably seen variations of these tricks. The coin and pen routine moved too fast and was confusing. The production of the drink was nothing special, the method is inferior to others out there.
And, the menu system isn't great. On a positive note, the video is sharp and the lighting is pretty good. Considering all of the DVDs out on the market, and the fact that we all live within certain budget constraints, your 30 bucks could be spent more wisely on something better. |

I'm not saying that you have to like Jasons magic, but to call the oil & water routine or the okito box routine mediocre is just stupid. Let's see your DVD. Quote:

First of all, Asper is a heck of a magician. I know him. He has refused offers to publish a DVD from some people I know. He no longer visits the magic Café, and won't respond (plus he's banned). However since I know him quite well, I'm sure he'd point out that the "where's your DVD" is a weak response to a critism.
I also thought that the presentations weren't that hot. You can be low key and interesting, maybe Wethington is live, but it wasn't that pleasant to watch on DVD. I know several restaurant magicians who work seven days a week, and I wouldn't want to see a DVD from them! Just because someone works, doesn't mean that their material is meritorious for magicians. You sound a bit defensive of your friend (as I am of Asper). Reviewing friend's products can be tricky -- look at any Mike Close review of any Kohler product. |
