Hi
I am a fairly young magician and have been in magic for 8 years. I am getting more and more into stage magic and am beginning to find a lot of the stuff I own and wish to perform requires an assistant. My problem is that as I already said I am only a young magician and therefore no proper income. The shows I do, are there as a platform. I tend to do free shows for experience. This means I can't pay an assistant, for the shows and competitions. I am as of the moment single and any girls at my school would probably reveal the tricks of the trade. How to I get a regular assistant for one off shows. These would come around once every 1 or 2 months. The tricks I am doing would be relatively skill free on the part of the assistant. They would include appearances. They would however require choreographing. How did every one get their first assitant. Nick |

Nick,
If photos are involved, you will find that there are plenty of young ladies interested. Call a dancing teacher or modeling school at your destination. Good Luck! Bob Magic By Sander |

Do you ever ask for pay for a gig? I know you are young, and I am not sure what kind of shows you are doing, but even a small amount of income would be something. I started doing magic for money when friends of mine offered me $75 to perform for their daughter's ninth birthday party. It wasn't much, but it was a start!
As for an assistant, my experience suggests that you ask. I was very pleasantly surprised at the response I got when I asked for an assistant. Dance studios were particularly helpful in my case. As for your assistant revealing your methods, let her know, in both action and words, that it is more fun not to tell! There are a variety of ways for a performer to let the curious know that they will not tell. The response I started with (still one of the simplest) was, "It's magic!"

Know what can work out even better than an assistant? Another performer. This will make you a team and you can both draw on your strenths.
Some of my favourite teams are Penn and Teller The Liars (Outta Control Magic Show in Orlando) Whats cool is that the other performer doesn't have to be a magician. If you have someone that is a juggler, well you just added another dimension to your show and added value. Maybe they are an artist. You could do some really cool performance art stuff in between illusions. Think Blue Man group. And in that vein too, they could be a musician. Walsal, at least charge something for the show. If they can't even afford $50.00 then it is not even worth it. I always charged for my shows when I was 7-8 years old. I would even charge 10cents admisions to a weekly show I would put on in my back yard. At least it was something. |
