This afternoon I was riding in a local park when I happened on a woman hiking with a group of 9- or 10-year-old boys. After chatting about horses and children for a while I gave her my business cards. She told that boys that I was a magician, and they all asked me if I could show them a trick. Finally, one of the boys handed me a small rock and asked if I could make it disappear.
A classic palm, a false transfer, a rub of the hand, a magical gesture, and the rock was gone! Another rub, a Vernon load, another magical gesture, and the rock reappeared! I've read many books that suggest that holding one of a list of objects in one's hand - a wand, for example - to make a palm look natural. Nowhere have I read of anyone suggesting reins. They work really well! Jeff McBride has told me that I should be ready to perform any time, anywhere. Apparently that includes on horseback. ;) |

Great idea! that's the sort of thing that I consider impromptu, yet amazing

It's not exactly impromptu--you have to eat a lot of hay and oats beforehand, and then the timing has to be right...

Khaleel's timing is impeccable.
As with anything else, it helps to enjoy practicing. ;) |

A miniature horse would be the correct height, and, although they are not designed to support a lot of weight, Mr. Roth isn't particularly big. As far as we know, he may, in fact, be teaching both moves on horseback, laughing up his sleeve the whole time because the viewer isn't in on the secret. That would be just like a magician, wouldn't it? |

Eddie McGuire, the fellow that brought the legendary Walter Scott to New York in the 1930s and wowed the inner circle of card men, claimed to have done a magic act on horseback in rodeos. Eddie as slippery fellow and it is very likely it didn't happen. If it did, it was something like Cardini's act on horseback.

Nice!
Who was it that did perfect faro shuffles on horse-back? Dai Vernon is the man who witnessed this but I can't recall the guy's name! Equestrian magic... I've heard of equestrian mentalism but this is new!
There she was, a dodgy old prune in a tiara, rushing at me waving a sword. Do all knights suffer this whilst being made?

I recall an outstanding interview in Magic with John Steinmeyer regarding a stage vanish of a horse (ok, maybe it was a burro or some smaller similar creature),performed about 100 years ago. The secret was never revealed, and Steinmeyer determined how it was done, with the help of a friend. The secret was ingenious. It may be in his book, Hiding the Elephant.

Another excuse to go thru the Vernon books, Thanks! Just did! "Vernon Chronicles - Further Lost Inner Secrets" by Stephen Minch; Page 113: "Black's Stack" According to Vernon, Black could do perfect riffle-shuffles, without resorting to faro-meshes. And he was a cattle-rancher from Thedford, Nebraska, who practiced in the saddle... Bjørn
