Hi all,
How do you go about choosing music for your act? I want some classical music for mine that's quite rhythmic---should I just listen to loads and loads of cds until I find the right song? thanks George |

George,
If you have digital music stations as part of your cable TV package, try listening to those, because the composer and performer are on the screen for every piece. If you have iTunes, click on "Radio", and then on "Classical". Same deal there; composer & performer listed. Cheers! Dan.

Keep in mind, though that while old classical pieces are no longer copyright protected, the "recordings" are. In other words, you can record Bethoven's 5th yourself, but to use the Maontreal Symphony's recorded version, you someone probably need to pay yhem a fee.
For the ins-and-outs of copyright law, don’t rely upon hearsay, or on any exceptions or work-arounds you read about in online forums: Check out http://www.cmrra.com, http://www.socan.com, http://www.harryfox.com, http://www.ascap.com, or http://www.bmi.com, or the performing right organization in your country.

George,
Let me encourage you to begin the process of using whatever means at your disposal to develop a well rounded knowledge of musical styles and artists. Not only will this let you become literate in knowing what you want, but should you get to the point of arranging for custom music, or working with a live band or orchestra, etc you will be able to communicate your desires to the musicians. When magic and music melt together you can literally "see what you hear". This is a very powerful are to be able to work with. Listen to everything you can. You will quickly find the things you "groove" with most naturally, you will also be able to appreciate things you don't necessarily personally like. These are useful skills for the well rounded performance artist. Enjoy! -Ed "The re-souling of magic should be the goal of the twenty first century magician"- S.H. Sharpe
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

Hi ufo,
Thanks for your reply. Yes I do need more knowledge about musical composers and styles---I play the pipe organ myself but that music isn't suitable for my act. I will try and get more musical knowledge then I know what category I need to search for. thanks again George |
