You need to buy Nicholas Einhorn's pamphlet "Spooked" Spider pen can do that with a little thought.

I just started using the spider pen for the haunted deck. Any tips on how you load the card? I've been loading into the side of the deck. No one's ever commented on it but it just isn't a natural way to put a card back in.
Any ideas? |

Use the same hook up as for Spooked or adapt the handling from "Loops" (which are probably better for haunted deck effects).

Yah, I love using loops for the Haunted Deck. It just ends so clean. I'm experimenting with the SPider Pen so I can have some distance between myself and the deck. To me, it looks a lot spookier when the deck is sitting by itself and starts moving.
I'm not familar with the Spooked hook up. |

Spooked is in my opinion the finest version of haunted deck, to get the card to jump its down to timming and using a quality thread. I use u.f.c. thread. and have never had a break doing spooked.

Hmmmm. Tell me if I'm wrong, since my Spider Pen's motor is so week I'm understanding that the work involved with the deck cutting itself or the card moving out of the deck by itself would have to be done "manually" and then after the effect as I walk back to the table the pen will just respool. So basically the pen doesn't really do anything then, it's just there as a convenient anchor and spooler?

Spooked indeed is the finest way of performing The Haunted Deck. Spider Pen is the most amazing T***** spooler ever invented. But I like to do the Haunted deck with Loops. For the spectator's it looks the same effect as they are not aware of the secret. And for you the magician, it's easier to work with.

Well, too late to experiment with the Haunted Deck and the Spider Pen, 2 days old and I've totally trashed it trying to install a new motor from one of my mini RC cars. ***, fifty dollars down the drain.

WTH were you doing trying to install a new motor?
You realize that the torque and RPM's would have to be matched perfectly for thread work and that just popping in a random motor wouldnt work, right? |

I had a low torque motor that was a bit stronger than the one used for the Spider Pen. With my motor coupled with kevlar IT it would have been able to support a lot more weight but I found out the hard way that the plastic holder for the motor was impossible to remove the original motor out of. It would have given the IT the nice amount of tension I could get from a thread boss.

I think the point of the Spider Pen to do the haunted deck is to have the tension of the reel on the thread so as to give your hands total freedom to do the work. The problem being knowing how much tension you can put on the thread before breaking. Any snags and extreme angles will also cause breakage. Loose box helps too! I think there are other versions of the rising card that can be easier to accomplish using other means.
But I too had to take apart my expensive spider pen due to breakage. After breaking my Spider Pen where it screws into the pen part, due to stress fracture... I decided to take apart my Spider Pen. I also thread in my own thread that I get myself from certain means. I decided to put another, cheaper, longer lasting battery source. Using AA batteries, which are smaller and last a very long time including keeping the torque up to par for a long time. I decided to put my own wires steming from the small motor unit, tape up to prevent short. Totally void of all plastic pen source. The unit holds in the hand well and is as small as the John Kennedy reel.. forgot the name. The on and off switch still works. I am incorporating a clip onto it so that I can put it on my belt, inside pocket etc.. Too bad for the cheap construction of the Pen. I really like the idea and it worked for a short time really well. I guess I over played with it. Darn batteries are also not long lasting and since I had to replace them so often, it caused the screw in part to fail. I tried gluing it with epoxy and taping it with clear tape but that did not work since the plastic rejects any type of glue! |

I don't care what anybody says, 50 dollars for the Spider Pen is a really bad deal. I'm going to stick with my Micro and Boss ITR's.

Thanks. BTW, I either use Finn Jon's "ESOTERIC" haunted pack or a simple handling I worked out that looks exactly like SPOOKED but with no reel, just a trailing I.T. and a little presentation set up.

I like Petes idea. The only thing about the Spider Pen (which I LOVE mine) that I don't like is that you have to go to the location of the pen and turn it on when needed and then turn it off. I can give it away if the presentation and misdirection is not done correctly. Good stuff though. If you don't have the Pen. Get it....some nice things you can do with it.

I kept the thread from my broken one. I love the thread. Just not the gadget itself.

Bumping this - trying to use SPP for haunted deck, trying to apply same method as with tarentula, i.e. starting with the thread "loose" and then moving back to engage the SPP. Doesn't seem like the most efficient method. Anyone have any ideas?
