Oh, one more thing...
To Evolve629: If you're into the history of Jay and like the idea of seeing some of the comedy, cartoons, and contests he did in the past and where he came from and that kind of thing... I would imagine you'll really like this set. For you the effects are probably all a bonus anyway. So this probably will be a hit for people that are buying it for all the extra stuff Jay put in there and I didn't mean to say that it wouldn't be a good set of DVDs in my previous posts. It's all a matter of what you were expecting I guess. If you were expecting a great DVD with his history, never before seen footage, and a bunch of his effects he's created on there, I'm sure you will not be disappointed. If you were expecting (like I was) the very best effects he has ever created, then you will likely be disappointed. Whenever you get this, do us all a favor if you get a chance and write a review. Hope you enjoy it. Dann |

The few Sankey brand dvds I own are all well shot and edited: 22 Blows to the Head, Front Row and Three Ring Circus all look great. Actually, I think VBO looks a little static with its locked down cameras. It's missing the kinetic energy of the other videos I've listed. But that's just my taste. The content is what really matters. And if you are looking for some really strong effects, VBO has got it. Even the weaker stuff is usable.

Please, spare me the moaning. If these DVDs don't suit you, you don't have to buy them or post about them. Yeah - if you don't like things - don't post about them - that way we only read the good stuff & spend $75 on it. That's no what this forum's about. |

I wonder how many people have actually performed his material for laypeople, I would hazard a guess at none!
His material is very commercial and highly entertaining, I for one am getting these and will post a review once viewed, I think if you can get one or two effects out of a dvd or book you have got your moneys worth, and I am sure with a total of 35 effects on these dvd's I am bound to find some killer LAYPEOPLE material, watch this space. oh yeah one more thing, why keep posting under this thread if you do not like them, you haven't even got them yet I bet, as it stated on the demo by sankey, his has got streamlined handlings and presentational tips etc, so there are bound to be improvements, enough said. |

I for one have tried many of these routines for laypeople. There are great routines on this set no doubt about that, just not his "greatest hits." That's all I've been saying.

The reason people like me keep posting is because people like you keep posting messages indicating a need for a response (see above and below): On 2005-06-02 12:48, Daren wrote: "I wonder how many people have actually performed his material for laypeople, I would hazard a guess at none!" My response to that would be that I've tried numerous Sankey effects on laypeople and have gotten great reactions! I'm with you on this one. Sankey's stuff is great and if you don't know the effects that are on "greatest hits" and are interested in the new handlings, past clips etc, by all means, get it! I'm not discrouaging this. However, if you want his best stuff he's ever created, get The Very Best of Jay Sankey. I hope I was able to clear up this misunderstanding. Thanks for listening. Dann |

Here's a question: Why did he do the VBO set for LL in the first place? Not that I'm complaining because I love the set, but why let LL put out stuff that he could have made money on himself with his own tapes and dvds? I mean, I guess he still does make money off of those effects because most of them are on his own brand of videos. But to release them all at once on a set like that... only to not make any money off of it... Strange.

When I e-mail Jay a while back, he told me it was a totally fair deal with L&L. Basically he shot the videos for them and took a one time chunk of money, so he DID in fact get paid for it, but in the long run L&L probably has made much much more money than Jay ever did on this set. Since the set is one of Jays most successful video sets EVER, I think he realizes that in the long run, he could have made so much more if he was getting paid EVERY SINGLE TIME someone placed and order for the set... in comes Sankey's Greatest Hits.

Ok. So now I'm curious. Has anyone gotten this set yet? Even Sankey seems to hightlight the bonus material and the extras more than the effects. Maybe I was just expecting something totally different. I'd like to hear thoughts on it.

It is true that Sankey already announced that he will not be with Penguin exclusively anymore starting later this summer. He will still be selling through them though.
I for one have always been pleased with Penguins level of customer service and their products. I realize they deal some products that are considered "rip offs" according to some at the magic Café, but if you don't like those products, don't buy them. Penguin also has many quality products and I've been nothing but happy with my purchases there, the service there and the low prices. I don't mean to turn this into a penguin debate. I'm just saying that I don't think Penguin will close down any time soon or that people are going to stop buying Sankey products because of this. Dann |

One of the reasons I like PenguinMagic is that they are consistently excellent in their customer service. Man, first they only ship items they have and they ship within 24 hours of ordering. My experience with L&L is also very good so is MJMMagic. However, PenguinMagic really has won me over with their lighting fast delivery and excellent pricing. Ok, enough about PenguinMagic. I want to say this: I'm a big fan of Jay Sankey for awhile and always will be. However, I'm not happy with his Greatest Hits. I don't knwo why he likes Carbon Paper so much. I also don't care for X, Tracking Device, Perfect Timing, Forgery, Please Don't Feed the Playing Cards. The bonus effects are not that impressive either. Why, because they look lame and really isn't up to par to regualar Sankey's stuff. Maybe I really have high expectation from Jay. Or maybe I really have no reason to order this Greatest Hits because I already have most of his stuff such as the Rev. Card and Coin Magic, Secret Files, 22 Blow To The Head, 45, 3 Ring Circus, No Card Tricks!, Firestarter, Dough, Earplugs!, In A Flash, Holy Moly, Magus Capsule, MERCURING, Public Transit, etc. So you can see I'm a huge fan of Jay but Jay, your Greatest Hits set isn't the greatest.

Evolve629,
Are you going to (or did you) buy Greatest hits? The post near the top of this page made it seem like you were excited about it, but near the bottom was just the opposite. If you did buy it, I'd be interested to hear your opinions. It is true that you likely own most of the material on the set, however you seemed interested in the history of Jay as well. If you do (or did) get it, let us know what you think. I think magicsquared is right (dispite the uncalled for sarcasm) that we should wait for a review of someone who has the set. Granted, it is easy to judge the effects since most of us have seen them all before, but I'm particularly interested in hearing about the additional material on the DVDs. Thanks for the input. Dann |

Hi Dann, I did buy the Greatest Hits and I was disappointed. I did go thru them kinda fast so I think I probably shouldn't be giving blanket statement about Jay's bonus effects in my earlier posting. I just watched it again, albeit cursory again, and I realized that there are good materials in his bonus effects. They are 1. Boxing Ring - a selected card somehow appeared inside the card rolled up within the ring itself and 2. State of the Union - two signed cards somehow keep turning up on top of the deck and at the end the two cards fused into one card. The rest I really feel that they are garden variety stuff of coins, pay envelopes and a very obvious mercury cardfold effect. Of course, they are subjective opinions and folks that bought the Greatest Hits, please tell me what you guys/gals think. Thanks.

Sounds interesting. I'd love to hear a formal review and especially how it compares to The Very Best of Series and other Sankey tapes from you or someone else who has gotten this set. Thanks for the information.

I just watched The Very Best of Jay Sankey again. I realized this set really does contain most of his best stuff. A lot of it is, however not his BEST. I'd say it's good, but not "best." Such is the case with tricks like "clipped" and "Broken English." There are more as well. I just wonder if Jay were to do a survey of everyone's FAVORITE Sankey effects and took the ones that got the most votes and put them on a DVD what they would be. I guess I'm just surprised that some great effects did not make it on the original "very best of" set and that some of the other "not as good" effects did make it. I honestly think if you were going to do a DVD of Jays best stuff, it would have to be more than 25 tricks. I also think half of what is on "Greatest Hits" would not be on there" and at least a fourth of "The Very Best of" would not be on there. Of course I realize in the land of marketing, it is not practical to actually do a "best of series" because then nobody will ever buy the other stuff. After all, isn't that why people are still recommending Sankeytized, Sankey Unleashed, 100% Sankey, Revolutionary Coin Magic, etc etc...

Resurrecting this thread from the depths...
Okay, so I saw Jay lecture a few weekends ago and picked up this set. Since no one really posted a review, I’ll chime in here with my thoughts. Much of the material on discs 1 and 2 have been reviewed many times before, so I’ll save the in-depth reviews for the bonus effects. Discs 1 and 2 are performances and explanations respectively. These are the “greatest hits” so to speak. While Paperclipped!, Back In Time and Airtight are not on here, these are all very strong effects. A lot of them are off of VBO with different names (“Just Joking” is now “Joking Around” and “Stuck Up” is now “Stapled!”, etc.). A few of the effects such as Fragile Harbor, (a.k.a Ship In A Bottle), No Jacket Required, and X, have some slight handling variations that I thought were nice. Interspersed throughout the dvds are clips of Jay doing stand up, doing magic on local news shows, and some of his one panel cartoons. This stuff is really interesting. I have to admit, he was a much better comedian than I thought he would be. His stand up act is well structured and pretty darn funny. He is a very polished performer. Anyway, on to disc 3; the bonus effects. I hadn’t heard much about the bonus effects on this set so I was pleasantly surprised to find that, for the most part, the content of the bonus material is very strong. And makes up just a bit for Paperclipped! not being on the Greatest Hits proper. State of the Union – A really nice two card ambitious card/fusion effect. This routine is one of the reasons I bought this dvd. Jay did this at his lecture and it played huge. For magicians no less. I think there is something to be said for seeing an effect live rather than on video. I think I still would have liked this effect if I had only seen it on the dvd, but it had a big impact on me at the lecture. Rolling Thunder – A nice two coins across routine. Mountebank Aces – Starts off as Three Card Monte, turns into an Ace revelation. Good effect but just when it seems to get going, it ends. A little anti-climatic for my taste. Extended Credit – Broken and restored credit card. This is also in Sankey 1999. Not wild about this effect but someone else might find it to be gold. Boxing Ring – This was in his 2002 lecture notes. Good effect. A ring is placed in a card case. A card is selected. It vanishes from the deck and appears rolled up in the ring inside the card case. I have a feeling this could play very big. Spark It Up – A snowman is drawn on a piece of tissue paper. The paper is wadded up and ignited. It goes up in a burst of flame. When the paper is un-wadded, the snowman has now melted. Cute effect. Laymen will love this. Hit and Run – For everyone who complained (including me) that he didn’t include Paperclipped! on the dvd, this effect should make you happy. A signed card is discovered folded up in the card case. As Jay himself states, it’s different than Paperclipped! in the sense that in this effect, the card magically travels to a different location, rather than being the card that was on the table the whole time. Unlike Paperclipped!, this effect is completely impromptu. This one will take a bit of practice, though. Transient – I love this effect. This and State of the Union are my two favorites of the bonus material. Basically, an X is drawn on the back of a card. Another card is freely selected. The X disappears off of the first card and reappears on a borrowed coin. The X then vanishes from the coin and reappears on the back of the freely selected card. Fun effect. Easy to do. Almost no set up. Case of Mistaken Identity – A prediction is written on the card case. It proves to be wrong. The case is rubbed against the selected card and now the writing on the case is correct. Good effect. Nowhere Coins – Miser’s Dream in your hand. It’s okay. I’m not wild about it. But then again, I’m not wild about Miser’s Dream in general. Overall, the bonus effects are very good. I’ll probably be performing State of the Union and Transient in my restaurant gigs very soon. While I liked the set, I would only recommend it to diehard Sankey fans. Very Best Of still gets my highest recommendation.

Thanks alot, cfrancis, for taking the time to post your review of the bonus effects. I like Transient too and I think this is one effect that he came up with Skutt prior to Sankey/Skutt.
