This past weekend, I provided technical services for the CAM Convention (Canadian Association of Magicians). Actually, this was only for the lectures and the close-up show. Minimal equipment, set-up and run properly. At one point, we realized that, although the lights and video cameras were intended for close-up, table-top use, we were better off with a stand-up shot and a close-up shot, and someone was able to bring in a more suitable (but still fairly small) lighting system which did the trick. There were TONS of awesome magic moments, but my favourite "technical" moment was seeeing the entire Martin Nash lecture (The Charming Cheat) with his cluse-up pad expanded to a 7.5'x10' screen. I heard many, many compliments, and the only negative comments were concerned with the afortementioned lighting underestimation, and that was taken care of pretty quickly. Evrything fit into my Ford Escape (small SUV).
~~~~~~ For those of you who are interested, I used; - A DPA lav mic, a DPA tiny headset, and an SM-58, all with a frequency-agile Shure system. - A powered mixer. - A Shure DFR digital feedback reducer, utilizing one scene for the lav, and another for the headset. - Four JBL "under balcony" or "stage lip" speakers, all on tripod stands. - A portable CD player with a few "variety" CDs, with crossfades between each song. - Two Sony, home-style, digital video cameras. - A camera switcher. - A Sanyo projector, 12' from the screen. - A 7.5'x10' double-truss screen. - Two lights off each front corner of the stage, about 12' off the floor. I'm no lighting expert, but I think they were similar to Source 4 PARs. - One small dimmer pack for each pair of lights. - A small console. ~~~~~~ The inside pair of speakers (one on each side of the stage, closest to the stage) was on the left main fader, and the outside pair (one on each side of the stage, furthest from the stage) was on the right main fader. This easily allowed me to keep the inside pair lower to help avoid feedback, and the outside pair higher to reach the back of the room. I'm quite sure that every word was clearly heard in the entire room. By the way, the close-up show featured Jason Latimer, Martin A Nash, Shoot Ogawa, Rocco, Romaine, Jay Sankey, and Michel & Yannick. The lecturers were Murray Hatfield, Martin A Nash, Hank Moorehouse, Obie O'Brien, Shoot Ogawa, Rocco, Jay Sankey, and Bill Abbott. AWESOME convention!
Did anyone bring their own music or one of the control systems so frequently discussed on the forum? If so, I imagine you did the hook up integration for your system. If not, were you provided their media and a cuesheet and was there any run through rehearsals for you to insure the timing? Is the video you shot going to be compiled and made available on a DVD?
Michel,
Thanks for your kind words. Was that you who did the camera switching during part of a lecture? glodmagic, A few people brought their own CDs for the close-up show, and only two did for lectures. I had my own portable CD player, and it's never had problems with burned discs. No-one brought their own player. Murray Hatfield gave me a cue sheet with one cue, and the possibility of a second, and he still went over it with me. Murray's met me before, and he was even a guest teacher at my "Theatre Production" class at The Sorcerers Summer Safari last August, so he knew I could do the gig, but he still had a proper CD and a cue sheet, and went over it with me. Murray knows how to do his best to make sure things go right. For Rocco's lecture, he gave me is show CD, made sure I'd spend my time next to the mixer, and every once in a while would look at me and ask for a track number. For his close-up show, he told me what track to start with when he was introduced, and I wrote that down. The others gave me CDs with verbal instructions ahead of time, and I took notes. Most performers used very clear verbal cues, saying something like, "Okay, Dan, track three" while looking at me. Only one performer used a verbal cue that was just a part of his script (a dangerous practice in a "one-off" show), but it worked fine. By the way, the Stage Manager for the gala show was Dale Hindman, president of the Magic Castle, and he seemed to do a fabulous job. Cheers from Toronto! Dan. Quote:
The only thing better than Dan's technical services is his SHANK shuffle. I propose, from this moment on, we refer to him as Dan (Shank) Mclean Jr., or simply - THE SHANK!
Thanks Dan, for letting us SEE and HEAR all of the magic. B. |
Dan,
It was great seeing you at CAM and thanks for your help with audio at my lecture. Yes I knew you could handle the gig but I do a cue sheet/script and new cd for every show. It's just one way to try and ensure that everythgin is going to go the way I want it to. Murray |
