Hopefully someone here ca answer this for me.
I have aa Mini Disc Player model MZ-N510CK Is there a way to take tracks I record on this unit and upload them to my PC to convert to MP3 without playing the track into a sound card? I don't think the software that came with the unit will allow me to do this. Anyone? Thanks |

Aaron,
I have an MZ-510 also but I haven't ever recorded song on the MD first. I always get them from another source and download them to the MD using Sonic Stage, which I hate but I've learned how to fool it into letting me check out anything I copy. I use Audacity as a wav file editor and copy audio tracks to new files and export them as new wav files. I also picked up a device by Xitel that converts USB PC audio autput to optical which you can record directly to the MD. I bought that before I figured out how to get around the checking in and checking out of files. |

What kind of digital interface (if any) does the MZ-510 have ? USB ? Firewire/1394 ? IEEE-1284/Parallel port ? (just kidding there)
Or is audio out your only choice ?

The best way would be the
1/8" input/output. I don't think there's anything real true way of just transfering the information unless it has a specified output for the computer to read as a data file.

There is not a way to get the music from the MD to the PC without playing it into the sound card or some other means of playing the entire song. That's the MAIN problem with the MD. http://minidisc.org/ John Quote:

Do I have my opinion on this YES. I record onto the MD all the time from the output on our band's mixer and I have to play the stuff into the computer "analogly" to get it to the PC. John |

That's odd. What's the USB port for then ?

The USB is to transfer songs FROM the PC to the device.

Their proprietary software, with the built-in restrictions of file transfer, is killing (or has already killed) the minidisc market. Circuit City doesn't even carry them anymore. I stocked up on disks in case the become obsolete.

I can't understand why it takes such a large & slow peice of software to do such a basic task. Try using Real Player. Real Player has a plug-in to interface with a MiniDisc. It does not allow uploads but it is a lot more efficient than Sonic Stage.

Sonic Stage is one of the worst forms of bloatware I have seen. I agree to a point. I thought that at first glance but once I started really using it I found it to work rather well. It has it's quirks but, like I said, once you give it a chance it does the job of transfering files to the MD. John |

I was looking for some sort of digital recorder to use for recording sound FX in the field, and as I looked into the MD, I found this restriction. This is one of the reasons I have never bought a MD player/recorder.
I had a friend that wanted to record his music street performances to MD and upload to the computer, edit, and put them up on his website. I had to give him the bad news after he bought the MD that the only way to do that would be to record the music real time to the computer in analogue. He was none to happy about that. It seems that since the advent of digital sound playback/recording, using a potable digital recording device, the manufacturers are making it harder to record your own stuff and do with it what you want.
