Any ideas on a Gospel presentation for the Arabian Tent Illusion?

Thanks just the same, Paul.

For Paul, and anyone else who is not familiar with the Arabian Tent Illusion, you will find it described in Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. Really, the prop looks more like a house than a tent. The effect is that the magician shows some large cardboard pieces clearly on both sides. He assembles them into a tent. (Like I said, really looks like a large doll house. The cardboard could be decorated differently, though.) When the magician removes the roof, up pops his assistant. Of course, the assistant could assemble the house and produce the magician.

The magician can open the roof of the house and pull out (produce in magical terms) a small prop or two before removing the roof and producing the magician.

Okay, so anyone have any Gospel applications for this effect? Thanks in advance!

I heard of it. I believe it is the one where you build a tent, then someone appears in the tent. Just as the person appears to have appeared in the house, you can make that like the Love of Christ appears in you.

Hi Bruce,

Can I suggest you work backwards? Instead of saying, "I've got this illusion, what kind of message can I do with it?", why not think first of the message that you want to communicate?

An anology would be that if you had a really great story, you wouldn't want to build a sermon around it (at least you shouldn't!) It is far better to think of the message that you want to communicate, then think of illustrations that would enhance the points you are trying to convey.

Too often our audiences are confused about what we are trying to communicate, because we aren't clear ourselves about what we're trying to communicate.

Remember, illusions are the means to communication, not an end in themselves.

Just my thoughts! Smile

Actually the version in the Wilson course that he calls the Ghost House or Haunted House (which is also one of his video magic course videos) that ends up with a double exchange is the strongest.

Not hard to build, but lots of prastice needed.

In my experience, working either way is effective. In Gospel Programs, the message is critial. The two factors that led to my original post are (1) I already have the Arabian Tent Illusion, which can easily be decorated and redecorated; and (2) I continue to create and perform many Gospel Shows with many different themes, so it is to my advantage to have a repetoire in reserve. But agian, the message is critial! If it doesn't work, I won't use it!

What I mean is, do you have a Gospel application for the Haunted House? (Please don't say Holy Ghost!)

Well, had I not used the name Mr. Wilson used, how would you expect the young man to FIND IT?????

Once found, IF he decides to use it, and prastice till it is perfect, THEN we can discuss a gospel application.

I am of the mind that not all tricks "cross over" well, but that is another subject.

A very good point, indeed. On the other hand, it is good to attempt to "cross over," if for no other reason than to exercise one's creativity! Smile

Well one can sleep on a table and call it a bed...

...or say because you can eat poop it is candy.

You can, I won't.

One has to make sure their "creativity" stays with the laws of identity.

If you fail at that, the only person you are fooling is yourself.

People come in here with the cart before the horse all the time. They have a trick they feel they do well, and REALLY want an excuse to do it, so they hunt for a gospel routine.

It really needs to be the other way around.....

I think that you can do it either way.... The effect first and then the message that fits it, or the message first and then the right effect to illustrate it.

To say that it can only be done one way, is to limit God in what gift's He gave to each of us. Some can, some can't. So what?

Phil 4:13 "I can do all things thru Christ who strengthens me."

I heard a great line on "Doc" on PAX TV the other day, where someone wanted Dr. Cassidy to do something, and he said "back where I come from they have a saying:, Those who can, should. And those who can't, shouldn't try!"

If it isn't your thing to do one way, or another, so be it. don't try it. But it doesn't make sense to tell others that it cant be done, when it already has been done many times over.

Ummm....

Just for the record...

Please show me where I used the word "can't".

I'd rather you quote my words please.

That is really the point. One "can" eat poop, but the act of eating doesn't change the poop into ice cream.

You "can" put the cart before the horse....

...it simply works better the other way around.

Chill out Mark. You seem to have an attitude in response to anything anyone says to you. And I really wonder if you couldn't, with a little effort find better examples to support your point than "eating poop".

While in the above statement, you didn't say can't, you did state "It really needs to be the other way around....." and with that statement, which is simply your opinion, I simply must disagree.

After your statement of opinion, I stated my opinion - based on personal experience and the experience of many others I know. I say "it can be done either way".

I have developed a large number of effects/routines, many shared with others here, and many others shared with others around the world. In many of the routines, it happened one way, and in many of the others, it happened the other way. But at the end of the day, it hardly matters how it came about, if it provides an interesting/entertaining/illuminating message illustrated by an intriguing effect.

So once again, to say it works better one way than the other, is your opinion, and you are welcome to it. I simply think you are wrong on that issue. I beleive that in other threads, we have had pretty much this same discussion previously here when you were posting under your real name Mark Tripp.

But since no one is going to Hell for believing either you or me on this point, why do we labor it so? Let's focus on the undeniable that we have in common, if we are both Christians, and ignore the unnsupportable issues that divide.

Astounding Bruce

Something along the lines of death ... and resurrection might be considered. I mean, the person disappears from somewhere else (earth), buried, dead gone etc and reappears in this beautiful palce "heaven" (the tent)

Just a thought to toy around with since the tent can be decorated in all osrts of ways. (I go to prepare a place for you?)
Many Blessings!!
