You got my curiosity up, so I did a quick search. It is a scam. Info on the scam is available here... http://www.greataupair.com/Nigerian-aupair-scam.cfm
(I guess people must be wising up to the old "Nigerian Scam," so they're trying something new.) -Brad |

What's funny is that it appears to be a template... And the "scammer" doesn't even change his first name to be all capitalized to match the rest of the email...
Thanks for the heads up Chris... RDS

This same scam was attempted on me... It was written up in the June 2005 issue of the Linking Ring Magazine (page 83).
It was also writen up in "The About Magic" web site at http://www.magic.about.com/od/themagicbusiness/a/lyndel1.htm Regards, Lyndel |

This might have something to do with this scam...my roommate sold his laptop on a web site here in san diego, ca. He received $4,000 in cashier's checks for the laptop, he only wanted a few hundred for it. The letter enclosed with the checks said something like, "cash all the checks and send me back the remaining balance." We took it to the police and it was a scam, they were located in Kenya or some part of Africa. So be careful...the checks were forged (I could tell right away because I have a degree in forensics, it was a forged document.

Josh,
Yep, that was just another incarnation of the "over payment scam" that is now circulating, but is now targeting entertainers. Typically, the person agrees to purchase an item, overpays by a substantial amount and requests that you send the overage back to them via Western Union (cash). Your bank submits the check to the issuing bank and credits your account with the entire amount. Then, it gets kicked back because it is a counterfeit check. Your bank then DEBITS your account for the entire amount and unfortunately, if you have already returned the "overage," you are out of the cash... The check that was mailed to me was also a fraudulent document and was turned over to law enforcement. As a former police officer myself, the deal stunk from the beginning! You can read more about how the scam works at http://tinyurl.com/bdtnw Help spread the word by telling all of your magic associates so that nobody will get taken in by this scam! Lyndel |

I think it is disgusting what people will do now for money. We are in a tough enough business (selling memories) to have people out there like this. Great post! I'll keep an eye out. Also has anyone actually talked on the phone with one of these "clients?" I have had legitimate emails from clients (who have booked me) and when they do email me, I tell them they need to call me. 2 reasons: 1) I can sell better on the phone and 2) I can tell if they're the real deal or some other magician or scammer trying to find out how much I charge, etc.
Has anyone had another magician pose as a potential client, just so they could see your promo material and how much you charge? To be completely honest when I was starting my career at 15 I did that, because some of the magicians that tell you to your face how much they charge for a corporate gig; you can usually cut that fee in half and take 10% from it. How do you guys deal with those kinds of people? Also, I don't do that any more, just when I started. |

How do handle other magicians who talk themselves up? I ignore them.
I'm putting together an act based on fraud and cons. I should include this one! |

Once in a while I get at a few different bogus e-mails at a time.
What I like to do is to take the contact details of one, and the contact details fo the other and then send those details to each of the posters, e.g., The lawyer acting on behalf of the former Presidents' family in Africa gets the contact details for the lawyer of the son of the bank owner, and vice vercia. I then tell each of them that the contact details I have provided them with are for my lawyer, as I would prefer to have my lawyer help them with this urgent request. What is really fun is when I get a copy of the further corospondance, each scamer writing to the other thinking that they are working with me to get their $$ released. It's loads of fun, and can long lasting. Give it a try next time if you've got nothing better to do. It does beat spending time counting sponge bunnies... |
