Mr. Osterlind:
Many years ago I purchased your stainless steel blindfold and radar deck. They are among my two favorite effects. Thanks for putting them out.

I'm so glad you have been using them for so long. Rest assured that I never put out anything until after I have used it myself for a long time.
Thank you for the compliments! Richard |

Hi Richard,
I just wanted to say how good it is to see you as a featured guest. Many fine questions answered here and it pokes me in places that I've not previously shown interest - that's always a good thing. Say hello to Sisti for me. -Your friendly printer in PA. |

Blindbo,
I'm glad I have been able to "prod" you a bit. We all need some of that! I will certainly say hello to Jim, but he will probably read this for himself. Regards, Richard |

Richard,
I also have to thank you for your stainless steel blindfold, even though I've never used one myself. Two of my mentalist friends have had great success with it, however, and many times, it's been to my benefit. Let me explain, because it's a useful bit we came up with, and I'm curious to see what you think of it: I had a parlor type show, and five minutes or so before showtime, my friend walked out into the room in full blindfold regalia, and generally acted as showroom manager, seating and greeting people, touching extended fingers, and sensing seat number with his fingertips. As curiosity built, he would work his way to the stage, and, once the question was fully at the front of everyone's mind, he dramatically removed the blindfold, piece by piece, half dollars, and all. This got a first round of applause. He blinked, then went into introducing the premise of the show, and me. This really got the audience in the mood for the mental mysteries to come. Always better to show them, rather than tell them, as they say. The part that tickled us, however, was the idea that we were doing the blindfold act essentially backwards. Have you ever experimented with this sort of structure? It seemed to place emphasis on the impossible conditions your blindfold system allows, since we raised the question first, then showed them how impossible it was to see. Or do you perhaps agree with the folks who say the impossibility of seeing shouldn't really be the focus of a blindfold routine?

Curtis,
I LOVE that!!! What a clever idea. As you may have noticed from some of my routines, I sometimes routine the effect so that, after its over, the routine continues to build in the minds of the audience. The more they think about it and the conditions, the more impossible it becomes. Your use of the blindfold in the fashion you described strike me that same way. The audience first sees a really impressive steel blindfold. That is mystery enough. But then, after it is removed, step by step, they see how much more was there that they didn't know about! Then they go back in their minds and remember everthing that the guy did while blindfolded and it becomes more amazing as they remember! BRAVO!!! Richard |

On that note: I am very nearsighted, and so with a blindfold on I wouldn't be able to see a PCT... And of course it would be rather silly to blindfold oneself wearing glasses...
Does the silver dollar layering work with contacts, Curtis?

Brian,
A strange thing about the Stainless Steel Blindfold is that, for some, it can actually IMPROVE you sight! That is true! I don't know about the contact thing. Maybe someone else can answer that. Richard |

I wear contacts and the coins have no effect. It's not like the coins are pressing against your eye balls (ouch!), so contacts are not an issue.

Bill,
There is an old story about Kuda Bux playing poker with Dai Vernon. He kept playing the wrong cards until Dai finally blurted out, "Kuda! Will you put your ***ed blindfold on so that you can see the cards!" Richard |

Well, we're blushing over here in Hawaii. Thanks again, Richard.
We thought it might make an interesting way to kick off a solo act, as well. The performer is introduced, and either: 1) enters from the back of the room, doing a few sightless bits as he takes the stage, etc. and then goes right into his act, or 2) is led on by the host, and is carryng a paintball gun. He sweeps the audience a few times, then finally fires at a target, perhaps one behind a paper blind, shows he scored a bull's eye, and then proceeds. I liked the first approach for its natural joke that the performer had driven to the show with the blindfold on. I can't comment on the contact question, I never wore the blindfold setup. The other two guys were doing it, and this is a small town. They both wore glasses and contacts, however, and never mentioned any problem. So, if anyone else likes the idea and wants to work with it, (and performs anywhere else but Honolulu) please feel free. Just remember me when you're filming your first TV special.

Richard,
I too would like to say thanks... I have several of your works (notes, DVD's,etc.) I just got your PCT booklet(from H and R) earlier today. I really appreciate all of the great details in each of the sections (there's a lot more in there than just the fantastic PCT, the best $25 value I've spent in a long time). All of the accolades are well deserved. Thanks for sharing. Sean Waters http://www.watersmagic.com |

Sean, your post convinced me to order the PCT book. And here I was gonna wait a few weeks 'til the new Osterlind stuff (NOS) came out. (That new book should be out just in time to make for good recovery reading!)

Chet,
Do it. Although I have the Mind Mystery DVD (that contains the PCT), I was thrilled to read the booklet. Although many prefer DVD's (not me), book(let)s will always have some details and subtleties that can't be explained (for time or other reasons) in a DVD. I have a pile of torn 2.5" x 3" paper on my living room floor to express my gratitude, it was great. Richard, Kudos (sp?) for the lighter effect (for you fire lovers and zippo fans). I had a magic friend describe this years ago, and I was thrilled to find this, and the real details in your PCT booklet. (effect: a PK demonstration that causes the flame of a lighter to rise and fall upon concentration). Really a great bonus to find it there. By the way I am not a Osterlind shill (respectfully), I really found a lot of great things in PCT. Thanks, Sean |
