Dear Mr. Osterlind,
Profound thanks for your generosity in being here. I'm a novice (aspirant?). It was heartwarming to watch the THRILLS that you produced in the L&L audience with every effect on "Mind Mysteries." I have to ask if in an often more reserved corporate environment, you find comparable enthusiasm-- at least expressed with such force? Settings can make a difference... Also, if I had to gauge the two "biggest reactions" based on audience vocalization, I would say they were the 'Radar deck' and 'glass of water production.' (Of course, mute astonishment is no less a reaction than applause or exclamations). In the interview with J.S., you described the pattern of '5 effects,' the opener being a "big one," the second being more intimate. Would you feel a g.o.w.p. could be a show opener, and would your magazine test be a suitable followup (i.e., does it pass the intimacy test)? Thanks again, Brian

Brian,
Yes, I often get the same reactions from the corporate audiences. They are not really that refined, etc. At least, not when they let their hair down and have a few drinks! Sure, you could use the glass of water as an opener. Kreskin and Dunninger both did that with the same effect and the cloth bag. And yes, you certainly could use the magazine test for the second number. I have used it as my closer for so long, it is hard to imagine using it in a different place, but that is just me and what I have gotten used to. Thank you so much for writing and I hope this was helpful!' Richard |

Also the cellular phone effect with the swami received a hugest reaction in the DVD Mind Mysteries...

I think if modern technolgy is to be incorporated into our performances, it will be in ways like this. I have gotten some very interesting ideas sent to me by other mentalists concerning video cell phones, camera cell phones, etc. I can't reveal those as they are not mine, but they almost all rely on standard principles applied to new gadgets.

Thanks very much... yes, corporate shindigs can be quite wild: I guess I wasn't thinking of a party but a lunch meeting or a training session, which shows I need to expand my expectations.
I think Kreskin and you are very much alike in presentation and charisma.

Brian,
I have always admired Kreskin and his way of working. He comes up with some outstanding original ideas and his presentation is always top notch. I sometimes play "quieter" gigs. You just have to adapt. Sometimes half the response from a group like that represents twice what you get from a louder group. And don't forget that sometimes, if you really kill them, you might just get quiet! When they forget to applaud because they are truly astonished, that is a good thing! Richard |

Amen to that! As Paul Harris says, "Let it breathe."
