Hi Richard
I was curious if you ever did any work on performing magic squares. I haven't found anything in print or DVD from you on making these during a show. Have you made magic squares as part of your show? Is there a specific system you used? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this Bill |

Bill,
No I haven't. And I really should. It is a great effect. I saw Harry Lorayne do it once and it killed! It is a great item that you can always have on hand and do anywhere. Bill, you have inspired me. When this week is through on here, and after my fingers have recuperated, I am going to work on doing a magic square presentation! Sincerely, Richard |

On the back of my business card I have printed the magic square. so when somebody ask me for my card I let them give me a number and fill in the square. they go home with a momento but can also tell their friends "look he did this". I also close with it when doing table magic.

Robert,
That sounds real strong. I would think that if you are going to let them keep the card with the square, you would want to do a version that was a bit more complicated than the one in Harry's Magic Book. With that one you might figure it out if you were able to examine all the numbers at your leizure. He has a more advanced routine in what? Reputation Makers? Richard |

There are easy yet powerful magic squares in Chuck Hickok's Mentalism Incorporated and James Biss' Messing With Minds. Doug Dyment's Mindsights features a magic square that can be repeated dozens of times without revealing a pattern. I don't have it but it can be found here: http://www.deceptionary.com/mindsights.html

Dear Richard, thank you for your kind words. I have learned that people are looking to the card but I say to them there 20 ways see if you can find them. sometimes I help them (a bit). now peolpe ar looking for the many ways and not the solution. people say to me usually "you must be good at math".
sometimes people put their cards together to see how it works. My trick is .... I can write the square in 8 different ways. this way they get crazy about al those numbers and give up. one idea I sometimes do is that I let them write a number on a card and fold it (sounds familiar? - pct or the peek from your watch trick) then I fill in the square and hand it to them. |

Robert,
That all sounds as though you "have it down pat"! Thanks for sharing all that. Richard |

Robert,
Can you share with us which square you use? Is it published? Or is it your own creation? Thanks, Fred |

Doug Dyment's "Flash Squared" from his book "Mindsights" is an excellent method and gives you a very strong piece that can be repeated several times with different squares - even for years >1500, e.g. the birth year of the participant. Highly recomended.

A couple more thoughts on magic squares:
While we are talking about different magic squares, David Berglas has a real good one in his book. Not impromptu, but it is quite an effect. I learned making magic squares from the "13 Steps to Mentalism" book; but drove myself insane not realizing there was a mistake in the instructions. Fortunately I figured it out before any damage was done (Yeah, I know its mentioned in the errata too, no one needs to point it out). |

I learned the magic square from a Tony Griffith lecture years ago. He has a round card printed. On one side the magic square the other side his foto. it is printed like the old compas effect. so 2 effects in one. compas & magic square. the magic square bert allerton's book the close up magician pages 20/21 have fun |
