Hi Richard, I was wondering if you ever get intimidated by certain audiences. The reason I ask is because I watched a Comedy Magician go up on stage to a audience of Brokers. They already had quite a bit to drink and were getting pretty rowdy. The performer handled it quite well but had to tough with them a few times.
I got to thinking about the different kinds of audiences performers encounter and I was wondering if you change your temperment at times to adjust to certain kinds of crowds. Great to see and listen to your wisdom here on the Café. Best, Sean Macfarlane |

Sean,
Most times I find that if you give me about 5 minutes, most audiences quiet down very nicely. But that is not always the case. The old adage, "There is no such thing as a bad audience" is simply not true! There are some terrible ones! Luckily they are few and far between. Please remember, I have played to just about every type of group you can imagine. (Yes, bikers, prisons, stags, you name it) But the worse can be a sophisicated group where some loudmouth believes he has the right to do anything because he is a VP or some supposed person of importance. These are the hardest because everyone is afraid to say anything to them. I would only call someone like this out as a last resort. But the bottom line is that it is your bread and butter. I often how someone like that would feel if I showed up in their office on Monday and made trouble! (and I have said that very thing on stage! - forgive me ) Sincerely, Richard |

I once worked a banquet where half the audience was Deaf and "listening" through a sign language interpreter. English jokes don't translate to sign well and it played havoc with my timing. Misdirection for the Deaf was a breeze though, I just made a comment and waited until the heads turned to the interpreter!
