I'll be honest with you, I'm a kid's show magician, and as such, I don't do a lot of mentalism. In the past, this type of magic was interesting to me, but I never needed to use it in my shows, so I never pursue it. All that has changed after seeing your Mind Mysteries tape. Now, I'm a true believer as to the power this type of magic can invoke. I admire your effects, presentation style, and teaching skills--I can see now what all the fuss is about!
But, here's my situation, maybe you can help me: In a couple of months I've been asked to do a show for my brother-in-law's wedding rehearsal dinner. Are there any effects you can recommend for this type of occasion? Also, the bride's father is a general contractor, so I'd like to have at least one trick that would somehow relate directly to him. Any ideas? Thanks, Marty. |

Someone mentioned in another thread here on the Café, doing a cut and restored rope for an anniversary party that touched every one there, it sounds like a perfect thing to do for a wedding or wedding rehersal thing.
Let me see if I can find that thread...... here it is: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......6&15 Try this thread as well: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......5&12 But I will stop here and leave the floor to our guest.

Marty,
I don't usually try to tailor my shows for the audience. I just verbally acknowledge the guest of honor, or the reason for the affair or whatever, then just do what I normally do. If I can tie in something easily, then I do it. For instance, last week one of my shows was a private party for a couple who have been married 25 years. So my first number was the linking wedding rings. That tied in nicely. But the rest of the show was just my normal one. I think you should have a set routine and just work very hard on it. You can't be changing the effects you perform every time you work just to try to make things fit the occasion. You will never get one show mastered. Look at anyone who is a pro and works all the time. They stick to what they do. I have seen Kreskin quite a few times over the years and his show is always pretty much the same. My advice is to put together a good one hour show and don't worry about who you are going to perform for. Master that show and you can always tailor your presentation to fit any qroup. Richard |

Thanks Richard for the very practical advise and taking your time with this Café' Forum--it must be very time consuming to answer all the question, but we all appreciate it very much.
Oh, by the way, I still have the original Ludwig drums my dad bought for me in 1964, and I still play. As a matter of fact, tomorrow, the community orchestra I play with will be performing. It's not rock 'n rock anymore, but I still enjoy it just as much (not as tiring and no long hours--how'd we ever hold up for all those late night gigs?). Thanks again, Marty. |

Thank you Marty and I envy your drums!
