Richard,
Perhaps you could share a horror story or two about something going wrong during performance, as a result of circumstance or your own error. Just to make me feel better about myself. Thanks, Scott. |

Scott,
So that you can feel better about yourself - at my expense!!! It's OK. Let's see. The worse two shows I have had over the last 10 years were both the result of an audience that was so loud that you couldn't hear anything! One was in NYC where the restaurant had adjoining rooms with no doors and the other crowds were awful. The person in charge realized it and booked me for a return show a month later in a much better enviornment. The other was in a room where one of the bosses was just drunk! Because he was noisy, everyone else was! And what do you say to that! They probably thought the show was OK. I thought it was about a D when it should have been an A. Oh, one more. I was doing an outside show for an insurance group about 10 years ago. My manager always tells the client, "Richard just needs to be seen and heard!" Well, just after dark, in the middle of my show, the electricity went out. The tent went black and the sound system was dead. I finished the show in almost total blackness and screaming! My manager later said that I was now officially trained for the Helen Keller school of mentalism! Richard PS. Just thought of one more. (Why am I doing this to myself?) As you probably know, my Thoughtscan routine is a huge part of my show. Besides the props I need a supply of 2 X 2 index cards and pencils and envelopes. I am up there doing my thing, and reach into the case to get the cards and pencils, and they are not in there! (Just so you will know, I am a stickler for checking everything over twice before I leave home, but somehow I just missed packing them!) I asked anyone who had pens or pencils to take them out and, while they were doing this, I grabbed a stack of my business cards, a pair of scissors from another effect and cut them in half while they were getting the pens! It was certainly awkward for me, but I suppose they figured that's what I always do! OH WAIT! I have one more! Banachek once saw me almost accidentally knock out a woman on stage with me at a comedy club in Houston! |

Scott,
Not really much to tell. I was really excited about having Banachek, Richard Hatch and their wives coming down to see me at the club. Everything was going great until I turned to pick something up and, when I swung around, the girl I had up on stage helping me had walked towards me, and I caught her right in the face with my arm!!! I thought I was going to die! (So did she, probably!) It all worked out. She was fine and thought it was funny. Later in the show when I was doing Thougthscan, a guy I was reading really reacted well and almost fell out of his seat. I turned to the first girl and said, "See what I just did to that guy? At least all I did to you was beat you up!" We all had a big laugh! Richard |
