Hi,
I've just found out that I'm going to be doing a childrens party in 2 months. There will be about 20-25 kids there, aged around 4-6... Have any of you got any ideas for any routines or any things that I should use specifically, bearing in mind that they are small children and my focus is with cards. Maybe I should use Harry Potter cards or cards that children would know about??? (Please nobody suggest a rabbit out of the hat ) Thanks in advance,

Check out "The Little Darling" section on this site. It deals with children.

If you want to do things with cards, your may want to look into routines with cards from childrens games. Something like memory with pictures on the cards instead of suits and values.
Audience participation and sucker effects also play well with kids. --Kris |

Hi Phoenix!
Yes! "The Little Darling" section is a great section to get a lot of info! Just scroll through and read as much as you can! A lot of great advice from seasoned pros! Since you do cards, please do card on ceiling with an easy to remember spot card. It's much easier for the kids to identify and recognize. Kids love it! Your going to read this is the Little Darling Section, but kids love mouth coils, sponge balls, Monster Hat, Dove Pan, and just about anything that they can get involved with and have fun! If it's a birthday party, I use the birthday boys/girls name as the magic word and establish this before the show begins! Kids love it and it really makes the birthday person feel special! Well, I better go so you can go to the, "Little Darling Section"! Have a great time Phoenix!

Thanks for that advice, I've just been through and read all of the posts in 'The Little Darlings' section: you're right, there is plenty of info from seasoned professionals!!!
By the way: What is a mouth coil??? I'll probably kill myself for not knowing this, but I'm just not sure... _________________ Dave The Magicians Living Room WhatShalliPutOntheSiteToday.co.uk One ring to rule them all and it's mine.

If you are used to doing card stuff, classical stuff like The Homing Card and Cards Up Sleeve can work well for children.
Torn and restored card, (simplest way with kids is to force one and use a Devils Hanky to restore it once torn. Holding the hanky up makes the whole thing a bit more visible. Cards Across with Jumbo Cards and musical instruments to make the cards travel. Sponge Bunnies is a must. George Blakes Silver Sceptre (Rising Wand).Drink in Newspaper. Balloon animals. Depends really whether you are going round the tables with kids or stood in one spot doing it. In England we do not have a thing about mouth coils, pulling stuff out of your mouth where there is food about is not considered very hygenic. Rarely used here. Since you're in the UK you might want to check out http://www.practical-magic.com or buy a book like "Performing Magic for Children" for when it happens again. |

Keep in mind that lots of little ones don't know the names of many of the cards. I get around this by having a kid sign (or draw a picture) on the selection, so he or she can identify it when you reveal it. Also, they love it when they see things that you don't, as in "Run rabbit, run", or any effect where you drop something and don't notice it. They'll let you know, loud and clear.

Hiya.
Practical Magic has a great rope trick called "Skip'n Snip." It's a cut and restored skipping rope, lots of built in comedy, easy to do, and a genuine "WOW" at the end when the knots come off. Cards. I do Nudist deck for kids. (Nothing to do with nudists, some call it phsycic photography or blank deck.) I start by showing deck blank, get Birthday kid to say magic word. 1 card has face. Get all kids to say M.W. 1 card has face 1 card has back. All kids SHOUT M.W. 3 complete cards. EVERYONE SHOUTS M.W. all cards have faces and backs. Everyone Whispers M.W. all cards blank again. Of course. if you follow my advice from the Blackpool thread, you won't have the problem Cheers Andy

Three things to consider:
1: Using Harry Potter cards for that age group may or may not work; Potter has a following among the 10- to 12-year-old age range. 2: Please, do not under ANY circumstances, pull a mouth coil out of your mouth (regardless of what they are called). It is unsanitary, offensive and disgusting to many in the audience and you don't want to give the youngsters any ideas about sticking things in their mouths. 3: The Miser's Dream is, arguably, the single best trick you can do for youngsters (and adults, too!). Many kids just don't figure you are a magician until you've pulled a coin from behind their ear. Good luck. cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

Peter is right on about the mouth coils. Also stay away from any fire effects or "sharps" (needles, scissors, knives, etc).
Peter is also right about the miser's Dream, although I do it with chocolates instead of coins.

HI,
It seems strange some of the cultural differences between the us and the UK. strangely you could pull out a sissors in a kid show here and no one would bat an eye lid paricarly if you explain to the kids that it is dangerous ext. but if we where to produce sweets, biscuts (cookies) or any edibles you are going to upset some one. one thing I often get asked when being booked by someone who has not seen me before is " you don't give the children any sweets or anything do you?" I agree with Peter children love the misers dream. phillip |

Thanks for all of your thoughts everyone.
I wasn't actually planning on using a mouth coil because I don't know how to do them anyway!!! Would cups and balls be any good for children???

There's an idea! Anyone ever use mouth-coils as a final load for cups and balls?

HI! About 20 years ago I won our close up magic comp with the cups and balls by transforming one of the final load balls into one of the 200' mylar streamers that magic hands used to sell. Because there is less distance for the streamer to pour from your hand to a table rather than the floor, it seems to pour for a long long time and fill the whole table.
Great for a comp or formal close up show, but no use for table hopping! phillip |
