I used to be on Jeff's mailing list....
I just checked downstairs through a pile of old catalogues, and found a mailer from Jeff Busby about "The Braue Notebooks"....... Tabman, you're right about his writing style....... Richard Kaufman.......didn't you write an "Editorial" in Richard's Almanac (I have a complete copy of originals) regarding "the fiasco of The Braue Notebooks"? or am I mistaken....? I remember reading something about this ("The Braue Notebooks") as being a fiasco, and I thought it was in something that Richard wrote........could be wrong... Mr. Busby sure had a unique style, thought, that's for sure! |

There's probably ten writers that I look forward to reading every word and Jeff was certainly on the top of that list, at least at one time. I think Michael Ammar's saying, "The more you tell, the more you sell!", was inspired by him.

When you reach the stage of physical derioration Jeff has said that he has reached, a recovery is very unlikely.

INFO on Ray Grismer and Jeff Busby,
After some serious investigating, I have determined as of March 19, 2010 Jeff Busby was alive. Unfortunately, our friend, and all around nice guy, Ray Grismer is gone. I have found an obituary, which I will display partially. It seems Ray finally got enough of ID and moved to another state, to live close to one of his three daughters. That is where he passed away. All three of them are lovely girls. Years ago, one was in body building competition. AS you probably know, one of his daughters married Jeff Bubsy. Ray was very knowledgable on card magic and had developed some binary mental tricks and some killer string and ring moves. While awkward at times, he was a genius. One of the nicest magicians I have ever met. I have taken last names out of the below obit to protect the family, with the exception of one and you know Jeff's last name. I hope this clears some things up. Garry Hayes Nashville, TN Posted: Friday, March 19, 2010 9:14 am Raymond Grismer, 82, died Jan. 21, 2010, at his daughter's home. Raymond was born July 6, 1927, in Wallace, to Joseph and Katie Grismer. He attended college at Gonzaga University in Spokane. He later enrolled at Berklee School of Music in Boston, concentrating mostly on the Schillinger system, which approached composing and arranging from a mathematical standpoint. Mr. Grismer continued his music studies with teachers in Boston, New York and Hollywood. He played with name bands, wrote arrangements for music publishers, and later taught. A jazz pianist, Ray loved improvising and above all, entertaining an audience. Though music was his passion, Ray also had a life-long interest in magic and slight-of-hand. For almost a decade, he worked nights at Starks Restaurant in West Covina, Calif.; playing piano and performing magic while finishing his masters degree at Cal State, Los Angeles. He went on to teach elementary school while raising his family with his wife, Sandy. Ray was a magician member of Hollywood's Magic Castle. He specialized in ring and rope routines and loved entertaining with a deck of cards. He loved to travel and lecture for magicians. His most magical moments were when he traded piano lessons for magic with master magician Dai Vernon. Ray is survived by his daughters and their spouses: Jeff and V***** Busby; Lisa and Fred; and Debbie; his sister Lois; grandchildren Clinton and Curtis; Jacob and Joshua. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Donald Grismer, who passed away in January 2009. |

Thanks Garry. Pete Biro and I had dinner with Jeff and V in Oakland during the development process for the Erdnase Train Table. We had already moved to Tennessee so it must of been around 1992. I just changed my Café picture to a snap that Pete took of me in his magic room that same afternoon. Jeff was fine at that point, or so he seemed. It was on that trip I discovered that JB was an amateur pedal steel player.

Me too. I met Ray at a lecture and still have his notes. He was very nice. I too heard that he taught Dai Vernon to play the piano and Dai taught him magic.

Thanks. I tried looking him up there, but didn't find the listing. I must have tried the wrong section or something.

Jeff Busby is alive in Wallace Idaho and for what it is worth he is not a very nice human being. He is arrogant and thinks he is better than everyone else because he is smart. He believes he is smarter than everyone else. Being smart means nothing when you are so arrogant that you think you are above everone else and can treat other people like crap.
