I'm wondering what kind of performance settings are OK for this? Can it be done close-up?

You can do this routine very close-up. If you do the routine flawless it will look impossible. This is my first ebook for magicians and Im already writing my second ebook with my best card effects. Some of the effects are really weird and very strong!

Can this be done on a smaller scale? Say with a shoelace and a finger ring?

I havent tried with a shoelace, yet. But, I think it will work with a shoelace.
The secret requires a certain status to work out 100%. I use this effect for all kind of performing settings and it works like a sweet dream every time I performs it. If it works out well I will put your idea in my digital manuscript. I have several un-published manuscript that I will publish in the future. Mats G. Having now tested this routine in the real world I can tell you all it's a good solid effect that gets a great reaction most of the time. Just when people think they know how the trick is done you hit them with a 'how the ****' moment.
It can be performed tableside or on stage. There is a one off preparation required to make the gimmick, but once made it should last a while. The gimmick is not a new idea but the way it is used is new as far as I can tell. I use this trick as a way into a longer ring & rope routine. A reset is required which may put some of you table hoppers off. You could do the reset as you patter with the spectator finishing the work off as you move on to the next table as long as you kept the gimmick hidden from sight. If you're already doing ring & rope magic this would be a good way to introduce the ring and rope. If you don't do ring and rope magic you could learn this as a solus effect. It's worth the price that Mats is asking. |

Thanks Sooty for the great review !
When you say : "There is a one off preparation required to make the gimmick" Does that mean it can not be done really impromptu ? Can it be done with any rope any time ? or the gimmick as to be adapt for each rope you use (clearly not impromptu in this case). exemple any shoelace and a finger ring will work ? Nicolas |

If someone puts a rope and ring in front of you and says "Do the trick", you won't be able to.
So in that respect the effect is not impromptu. The rope and gimmick need to match. If I say any more than that I'll be tipping the method. |
