I've struggled to find any Bicylcle or Tally-Ho cards, here, so what do Brits use? SO far I've found Waddington Bridge cards to be reasonable.

Most of us do use bikes. They are available at magicshops and recently have become available at Asda supermarkets for £1.49 a deck.

http://www.magicbox.uk.com
or http://www.magictricks.co.uk Both have joint lowest price on red and blue decks and excellent shipping. magicbox has a selection of other colours for slightly more £. magicbox sell bicycle seconds for £.99 a deck I understand there is no substantial drop in quality, although they are packaged in a basic box. It is impossible to get good cards on the highstreet, some asda stores do stock bicycle cards. |

The are cards that the company have deemed poor quality. BUT most have minor flaws and nothing that you would notice

Hey guys, you know?!
There's this unethical shop down here in Hong Kong (I've mentioned it's name elsewhere some time ago) and they actually made this hype thing about their poorly manufactured cards. they actually had their cards printed in the mainland, but print on the box "make in UK". they called the cards JAGUAR CARDS. Plastic coated. AND THEY SAY THE JAGUAR CARDS ARE RAVING ALL OVER THE UK. the truth is, has anyone here actually ever heard of such cards in UK? Or have seen them being sold in UK? Us magicians down here in HK know it's hype, but we want some good soild proof. So, Anyone? |

Nope, never seen them ever, and I've been to most the main dealers in the UK - sounds like complete BS to me.

Bicycle Seconds
Bicycle Seconds are the USPCC factory seconds. This means that the cards may have minor printing defects (i.e., the cards may be printed slightly off-centre), however, in our experience most of the decks are more than usable and if not are perfect for practicing. Wouldn't that make almost every deck a Bicycle Seconds deck? The Bike decks are bad as it is. I'd hate to see these. |

Whilst I, like most others, prefer to work with a fresh deck of bicycles, Jerry Sadowitz often appeared on tv (more so in his earlier appearances) performing with a deck of Waddington's No 1s. Perhaps some of the psychology behind this is to eliminate the suspicion of a trick deck, through a familiar back pattern and also familiar size (American playing cards often seem over-sized to the unsuspecting Brit).

I think the whole "familiar" deck theory is poor. Most regular people who own a deck of cards probably have a novelty deck with little kittens as a back design. They generally don't care what the cards look like.

On the whole I agree with you, excpet maybe for using a black tiger red pip deck, that's bound to arise some suspicion

Tigers do arouse some suspicion, but when I have done tricks (this is to some of my friends who are also 16 going on 17) they usually find the cards so cool, they overcome the suspicion, also I let em look through the deck.
by the way I don't know what you mean by american cards seem over sized to the unsupecting brit, we use the same sized playing cards here, nearly all poker sized. |

Mad Mat, if you were to buy a deck from a corner shop now I'd wager that it's closer to bridge size. Same length but about a quarter of an inch less in width.
I also guarantee you that if you enter any pub and were to hand a deck of poker sized bicycles to the locals who play bridge between themselves every other night, they would notice a difference. It wouldn't startle them so much they freak and jump through a window but they would notice. Like when a few cards are missing from a deck or extras have gone in, people who handle cards regular (such as card magicians) will notice. Nick 23, I appreciate your thoughts on the familiar deck theory and largely agree with them. On the other hand I'd be careful not to bring out the deck with tophats and wands on the back for my poker buddies. Kind regards, Martin Colclough. |

Any cards Ive ever seen in Britain have been Bridge sized, it was only when a magician friend gave me a pack of Amercian bikes that I noticed the difference. As I have small hands, the thinner bridge cards work better for me, but unfortuantely most gaffed decks are in Poker size
