I just recieved this book today and it looks great.
I am a bit biased because I buy almost all of Andrew Mayne's books and DVDs. I always find a lot of ideas that I can use or at least start my own creative juices flowing. This book is in my opinion the best of his illusion books so far. He explains illusion theory and what principles are used to hide people. He covers lots of really easy to make box illusions you could make in an afternoon. There are also a lot of other items like making a $99 bevel base. I will be using many ideas from this book, one idea in particular,Ghost box, is really easy to make and perform. I think this book is an instant classic for illusions. I can't wait for the other volumes. James Linn

I teach a magic class and all the kids cant wait to perform stage illusions. Obviously, their parents wont shell out a couple hundred or thousand dollars to buy them one, so I was looking into Andrew Maynes stuff, epecially his new book. My question is, are there any illusions that are VERY easy to build and perform and are inexpensive?
Please list all effects and short discriptions that would fall under what was said above. Thanks! Derek Merdinyan |

The built the illusions and pretty much ran the show. The results were disastrous! Every, and I mean every, one failed horribly. I'm sure that many left the show that night with an even worse opinion of magicians that they did before. The "professional illusionist" claimed to have worked with David Copperfield many years ago. If David knew how bad the guy was, then I'm sure he would not like having his name mentioned during the guy's show. If you must teach these children illusions, then please stick with simple cardboard illusion like someone else mentioned. |

I agree with xiqual. Try Mark Wilsons complete course in magic for a few card board box type illusions that are simple. Stick with basic magic for your class as there is much to be learned before jumping ahead into illusions. Sounds like the kids just want to know how things work to me rather than being able to actually perform magic.

I see your point, and I wont use Mayne's books in the class. But these kids don't want to just know "stuff." The class has 3 kids and they just paid over 100 dollars to go to a convention. One of them competed for the first time after being in magic less then a year. He didn't win anything, but it was his strive to compete that impressed me. He is 9 years old and still wowed the audience.

I finally bought the book. I thought it was very basic, but Andrew tell us us that at the beginning. The effects are easy to build and fairly cheap. The $1 head twister is an example. I did not learn a lot of stuff I didn't know but was a good refresher. My only complaints are 1) it needs a bit of editing in spelling, 2) a couple areas are a little vague and could use a bit more detail, 3)and its a bit overpriced in my opinion. Still a good read.

You know, I really loose my respect for someone when they cant even run a simple spell check (when available) on a mass produced doccument. It is really sad and says that the person must not care that much for it if they cant even make sure that everything is spelled correctly.

I am sometimes too critical because I am a perfectionist so the spelling errors may not have been a problem for others while I think they were too many for such a short document. I do think some explainations and illustrations could have been done better. Overall you still get the idea so the information is conveyed.

Forgot to add that the section on what he learned working with David Copperfield, while quite short, was worth the price of the book in my opinion because it gave me great insight that I had not thought of on routining a show. I had never studied that aspect and am in the process of creating a new show that I plan to take 5 years to do.

I remember being contacted by a high school drama teacher who wanted to have the Thin-model Sawing, the Origami Box and another illusion in a play. I told him what the budget would be for that, and he quickly set his sights a lot lower. lol Also, most people also have no concept as to how hard the cast for an illusion show have to work.

Better yet, teach them what you really feel they can accomplish and they have earned. Only you know, we're simply guessing. Don't skip steps however, Illusions are a ways up the path. Arabian Tent is always a great starter and inexpensive. As with the Tip-Over Trunk.
