Greetings everyone,

I am a researcher at a Japanese Buddhist University in the mountains of Dazaifu. In the past my research focused on alternative medicine, health and animal rights, with papers appearing in various journals.

Now for something different - research on the discourse of magic! My observation is that the discourse of magic includes visual and textual references to magical and spiritual traditions - for example, the 'trance' the assistant is put in before the levitation, the 'meditation' the magician sometimes performs during a trick.

At the same time, the audience knows that everything is an illusion, and that there is a 'rational' explanation for everything. Is the discourse of magic a way of re-enforcing the scientific way of thinking? That is my research question, approached with an open mind.

I would like to do a detailed discourse analysis of videos of magic shows in an objective framework. And I would very much like your help! If you have any comments, or suggestions, please let me know.

Also, I need to get more videos of magic shows, so please let me know if you have any to sell.

very best wishes,

Arran

Welcome to the Magic Cafe. I think your thesis is an interesting one. I am wondering whether your hypothesis is applicable universally or whether it varies from culture to culture. For example, I get a much stronger reaction to my magic when I perform in Mexico or Spain versus performing here for English speaking audiences in the States. Good luck on your research.

Pretty Interesting process!

Why do Magicians use Mystical presentations as a platform when the audience knows they are just being fooled?

Oh Yes! ....I have a lot of thoughts on that!

But now is the time to say Hello Smile

and Welcome our new Friend in this new year!

I look forward to hearing more from you about your thoughts on Magic.

Your research seems very interesting.

As for videos there are thousands of them on the market and many can be purchased on the Internet.

As for trances the illusionist places the assistant into, I could never understand the justification for that. We all know she/he is not in a trance, so why do it?

Are we trying to say to the audience, this is a dangerous trick and no rational human being would do it awake?

My only guess is that this act was once performed way back in history, and everyone copied it.

Is it a male dominance message the magician want to get across to the audience?

Well, your research sounds interesting, and I hope you let us know the outcome!

Welcome to the Magic Cafe!

Welcome aboard, arran.

You have certainly opened up "a can of worms" here and the topic will be discussed long and hard.

Why not move it over to a more suitable section, though? (i.e., "Food for Thought" or something).

Then we can REALLY get into it! Smile

cheers,
