I'm reviving a long-dormant thread for no other reason than to publicly thank Doug for the Traps-A-Monte-Mental routine he sent to me today. This is definitely finding a place in the act!

I bought trap from Tannens. Even though I heard regular traps work, I wasn’t sure and didn’t want to take a chance, plus it didn’t cost much more. I bought chose regular finish, not chrome plated. Then spray painted it rust color brown, let it dry. Then put dabs of Vaseline where I want brown to show through. Then painted in wrought iron black texture. Let dry, wiped away Vaseline, and it looks like a handmade rusted old nasty trap.

I take breadsticks and paint them off white. Look like bones and shatter spectacularly when in the trap. I also do the old juggler trick of whacking a carrot against the trap edge to show the edges are “razor sharp.”

Lonnie Chevrie has a nice animal trap routine in his Penguin Magic Lecture, which includes a bit on having cards in your mouth to set off the trap.

My wife hates when I do this routine as it makes her so nervous...

Tannen's or Abbot's? The Abbot's traps are just one of the fairly standard sizes, chromed.

It was Abbott’s magic. They gave the non-chromed version.

That is a /nice/ idea, using breadsticks as bones. I bet it really sells the illusion.
