Hi,
I think Beth (thank you for your kind comments, by the way) is raising an interesting point. I know of several performers who use one name for children's magic, and another for the stage. With some names, some genres might be harder to break into. Best Wishes,

As a mom, if an entertainer told me her name was "Raven" (stage name or not) it would not influence my decision on whether to hire her or not. My judgement would be reserved on the basis of how she answered my questions, whether she was courteous and businesslike, and whether she sounded like she knew what she was doing. I wouldn't hire/not hire someone solely based on their name.
I also don't think of the name "Raven" and automatically assume "dark". I think that Raven is a very unique and beautiful name! Again, you have to remember that she IS Raven...and its not just a stage name she is considering. I say if she is comfortable using her real name, then she is blessed to have such a cool one to go along with the venue. Cheers! |

Hi,
After reading this post a second time I was thinking of something that the major motion picture studios use to do. They changed many peoples names to something they felt was more suitable. For example John Wayne's, real first name was Marion..okay there are exceptions! Now studios rarely do that and what's interesting is a person's name while not invoking thoughts of a character at first does eventually make one automatically think of their personality. Think of Jerry Seinfeld, ..you think funny. Think of Arnold Schwartzeneigher (forget about politics for a moment) and you think he- man action movies. If the studios operated the way they did in the past..they would have probably changed his name to Stone, Brock, or whatever..never would they have chosen Arnold! Yet, you see what's happened their names didn't matter and if John Wayne had kept his name ..eventually the name Marion would have become synonomous with a tough guy. Raven will eventually establish her own persona and her name will also invoke images of what she eventually becomes. Just my random thoughts. Chrystal |

Hi Jl,
Thanks for the compliment regarding this post and of my name. I'm always interested in finding out "what's the story"?, behind a persons name. The name Chrystal is a nic/stage name that emerged on the basis of a chrysalid that metamorphasis into a butterfly. I was a very shy child but underneath there lurked a part of me that was dying to break out and pursue all the things I secretly wanted to do. The process was gradual and eventually I turned into a "social butterfly". That's my story. :O) Chrystal |

Why we are sharing our stories of how our names came about, I thought I would share with you my own. It really is nothing much of a story but came about out of something I realized that was happening when I met my girlfriend many years ago, who then became my wife.
My name is Kyle and my wife's name is Kelly. Everytime we went out someplace, when they would annouce us or when we mentioned our names, they always smiled. For some reason they thought the sound of Kyle and Kelly was amusing and fascinated them. I have no idea really why that is, but it still happens to this day. So just through noticing this happening a lot, we decided to capitolize on it. And so "The Magical Illusions of Kyle and Kelly" was born. To this day we still get great comments on the name and people seem to remember and recall it easily. So in my case, the name just came by accident out of observing what people seemed to naturally be reacting to. It has served us well over the years. Kyle

Nice stories Chrystal and Kyle.
Thanks for sharing them. Chrstal, I'm glad that you felt proud of your metamorphosis and created a name that spoke of this important life change. Your name therefore works on two levels. My own short story is that I took up my stage name Max after being inspired by the character and charisma of famed magician Max Malini. I also felt that "Max somehow " suited my gentlemanly, yet mischievous on occasion, character. When my wife was ready to join my show as an equal partner, we wanted to develop a fun sounding name for a magical duo. The "magic of Max & Maxine" seemed to have a nice ring to it (I'm also a die-hard fan of alliteration). Our clients and audiences responded well to our names and our personas. So we kept it. Nice to see another couple has had similar satisfaction with their names (ie. “Kyle and Kelly”). Chrystal makes an excellent point, though.. many successful entertainers have retained their birth-given names and gave primary focus towards building a highly entertaining and professional show. Then, after they had won their audiences over with their show, they automatically won respect and recognition for their name. Richard Osterlind comes to mind, and there are many others. A quick question for HowDini, However... Out of curiosity, what is your daughters birth-given name? If you've already mentioned this in an earlier post, my apologies. All the best. Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,
I hope Howdini won't mind me responding, but since I was here, I thought I would answer your question. Raven's name is actually Raven, which is why I think, in my humble opinion, she should use it! It is an awesome name, already invokes a bit of mystery about it, and would be easily remembered for its uniqueness. ~ Magic4ewe |

I think so as well but it really also depends upon just what type of magician or entertainer she wants to be. For example, Max has stated that he felt the character he portrays is best represented by the name Max as they seemed to go hand in hand.
I think Raven is a beautiful name, but it also has to fit her character and personna and be one of which she feels most comfortable with. Only she can determine what ultimately will be the best for for her and her audiences. I do, however, find the name raven to be very nice and certainly could work well. Jonathon: Thanks for the kind words. It does seem that you and your wife have a similar story as my wife and I do. The only difference is the fact that my wife and I naturally ended up using our real first names. But it does have that nice flow to it when it is pronounced. As you may know, I am also an artist, so I am always looking for ways in which the brand name or message is easily getting out to the audiences I perform for. I want them to recall the name easily and I want them to be able to recognize it even in my branded logo etc. For us Kyle and Kelly just naturally sounded right. It was funny though because we spent a while trying out different ideas before the obvious answer hot us over the head. Now The Magical Illusions of Kyle and Kelly has been doing wonders for us. The kids even recall the names even after the first time hearing it. It is a sort of easy name recognition thing that seems to probably work for you and your wife as well. The REALLY funny story is that I am one of 3 brothers who are all named after "K" names. We are, Keith, Kevin, Kyle and Ken. So when I met my future wife, would you know it she also had a K name? My twin brother Ken dated a lady friend for a long while and she too had a K name. Just bizarre I guess. Kyle

That is a great idea and one in which I do as well. I always have and know and set up more effects then I really have time to perform. I do this so that I can change the direction the show is going in if I feel I need to steer in in a diffeent direction. This only comes with practice and experience.
over the years, I have learned how to really read and feed off my audiences. If I sense a certain feeling or response from them early in the show, I have the ability to change the show around if I need to. By setting up more then I need, I can also use an effect in the event that one routine runs to long etc. It just seems to work best for me. I wish Raven all the best. Kyle

Congrats. I think that will serve her well. Now has she started to define her character and just who and how she wants to be portrayed when she performs? I think that is the next logical step to take.
