hello friends,
In the past I used red "billiard balls" for performing the multiplying balls, but my feeling now is that they just look too much like special magic props--even the expensive metal balls I see advertized seem this way to me now. Does anybody know where I can find a set of golf balls, or even a golf ball sh*ll that I could use for this effect? I think using an everyday item would strengthen the effect! alleytcat

The Magic Warehouse. http://www.magicwarehouse.com I believe it the web address. I got a couple sets for $11.00 each. They are very easy to make multiplication moves with. The balls are yellow. (There are yellow golf balls.) The shell looks great. It's such a close fit that I tend to show the back of it (when it's loaded of course!). Only thing is that it's so tight, the ball can get stuck in it. So it's a good idea to tape or glue a little piece of paper or felt inside it. When you first get the balls, they are somewhat slippery. I like to wipe them between my hands to knock off the new rubber feel, then they're easier to palm. Good luck.
By the way, what size wooden balls did you used to use? How many balls did your routine use? 4 or 8? What's your routine like? Thanks. Jim

If you want a set that handles like a dream, nothing beats a set of Fakini Tournament Golfballs. They have the right weight and they grip well.
I thought that the Empire Golfballs, mentioned in the previous post, were too small, light and slippery. Other than that the quality was good. |

Jim, I hope I didn't mislead you. I had little plastic red balls that were simply called "the multiplying billiard balls." When i was doing children's shows a lot, I just made them appear one by one until I had four--one between each set of fingers. That's it. But I would like to learn more if I can get a set of standard-looking golf balls.
Alan, where can I find the sets you suggest? I am not yet sure which kind to use. Thanks guys, alleycat

Fakini balls can be obtained through the larger magic shops. The following shops should have them, or are able to special order them because they are in short supply:

Hello Magic Friends!
I'm quite discouraged and sad as once more (I think it's the fourth or fifth time)I try to make-up a golf multiplying balls but with bad results : I'm not able to hold the balls in my finger and make the "move". In the past I thought that I needed more and more practice but... NOTHING! Now I'm wondering if the balls I use are too big for my fingers. I hope some of you tell me that the size of the balls are quite important for the manipulation and is not only the practice that makes the manipulation!! Until now I used the Vernet one (silver with wrilkly) and I like that. But if they are too big I think that there is no way to reduce their size, right? Any Suggestion? Thank you for help! Ste :wavey: |

There are different sized billiard balls. Tannens has 30mm, 35mm, 40mm, 45mm, and 50mm red billiard balls. Perhaps you should try something smaller.
Has anyone tried Hank Lee's Tournament Golf Balls? How do they compare to the Fakini?

Hi Alan,
as I understand you know very well the fakini balls, I have a question: does the fakini balls bounce? Thank you! Ste |

The right size will cause the fingers to be spread nearly to the maximum, if the fingers are all on the same plane. If the fingers are allowed to spread differently, with the index finger pointing straight up and the pinkie being perpendicular to the palm, larger balls can be accommodated. Empire, besides making a small set of Multiplying Golfballs, also makes a set of 1" red plastic Multiplying Billiards. They're too small for the stage, but they may be all that you can manipulate, if everything else is too large. Keep in mind that they're very slippery. |

Yes Ste, the fakini balls are made out of silicone and they do bounce.
And thanks for the info Alan.

Greetings STE-
years ago when I first got interested in trying out billiard balls, I had the same problems you did. Then I found a set of small ones that I could handle perfectly! I was on my way... one of my favorite old pix is me displaying the balls during a show when I'm like 12 or something... real sleight of hand, wow! So don't get discouraged, find a good shop person who will let you test out different sizes... just be careful you don't get a set that's too small I got a set of abbot's from the 50's or something that are tiny... needless to say, now I can't hold these little things any better than I could hold the larger ones years ago... Dang, all this talk of handling balls... I gotta get out of here... |

Another source for Fakini products is http://www.dennymagic.com . They are usually in short supply, but if you sign up on Denny's e-mail list, he will e-mail you when product is in stock.

hello friends!
just an update to my original post... I did try out the Empire Golf Balls, which were $8 from The Magic Warehouse. They are indeed slippery, but not beyond all reason. The best part does indeed seem to be the fit of the sh*ll, which is imperceptible--even for the close-up work I have just done with them. I did have to put duct tape inside because the fit is SOOO close. ...I do wish they were white because I feel that is the more natural color for golf balls, and I also wish they were hard like real golf balls and not so spongy/bouncy. (But even the Fakini Balls won't help me with the difficulty of hardness.) Someone near the beginning of this post asked me what routine I wanted to do, so here is what I came up with (as simple as it is): 1. One ball is pulled from a miniature briefcase which is obviously too small for it. ("Just in Case" effect) This is one reason I prefer a hard ball, to dispell any idea that the ball could possibly compress into the little space of the briefcase. 2. The one ball multiplies to four balls. 3. The balls vanish one by one and the last one is put back into the miniature briefcase. The end! alleycat

Sounds like a nice routine, Alleycat. I really like the opening, the opening production from the small briefcase. Ending it that way also gives the routine a nice structure. I might suggest some other moves to make "act two" of the routine more interesting. Once you have produced the second ball (with ball and s***l in right hand) have the second ball jump through your knees by knocking both hands against your knees and producing a palmed ball in the left hand while vanishing the second ball in the right hand s***l. This is a Bill Tarr move from his book on sleight of hand.

Jim,
I am VERY thankful for the suggestion. That seems like an excellent move that brings variety to my short little routine! Since I last posted i have done the routine once for a children's b-day party and once for a show in an English class, and my routine evolved a bit. The first two phases were pretty much the same: taking the ball from the tiny case and making it multiply. But for the vanishing segment I started doing something different. With the three balls and s**ll in my right hand, I took one away with my left hand watching it closely and saying, "If I take one away..." Then looking back to my right hand (where one had slipped away...), I said, "That leaves three." Next I used an idea I found in the book _Magic by Misdirection_ by Fitkee. I put one ball in my pocket and made it magically fly back to the right hand. I repeated the proceedure, saying, "Now there are three balls, but if I take one away..." In the end I am again left with one s**lled ball and can put it back in the too small case. If I add the move you just taught me, I think I have a much more interesting routine. Thanks again. alleycat

When I was a 12 year old living in a small town in India, with not much money of my own to spend on magic, and no magic dealers within a 500 mile radius, this is what I did for my school show:
I used four ordinary table tennis balls. I made the s**ll just by cutting an ordinary ball. I couldn't get the technique to make the s**ll expand, so obviously the balls didn't fit in nicely. Infact, a good 75% of the ball remained outside when the s**ll was with the ball. The only thing it did was make the angles a bit more difficult. Two or three extra hours of practice will make sure that is not a problem. Apart from that, you wouldn't know the difference. The moves were actually easier with this set. This was the most memorable trick of my show and my first "reputation maker" as they call it. I never bothered to get a proper "real" set till about 8 years later - just never felt the need for it. Even then, it was only because I couln't stand the thought of my favourite effect being done with such crude props. It hasn't made a bit of a difference since I started using the real set. |

Dear Rajat Mittal:
That is a wonderful story! I like the idea of using ping-pong balls too, because they are items that everyone recognizes as being ordinary. It would be nice to use a set with an expanded sh*ll, but as you pointed out, not necessary! Thanks for sharing. alleycat

I've tried looking for those Fakini golf balls that Alan mentioned. Thought I'd give them a try since I'm buying so many sets of different types of multiplying balls--looking for the ones I'll be happiest with. But I can't seem to find the Fakini balls anywhere, including the web sites Alan mentioned. Any advice from anyone? Thanks.
Jim
