Hi
I was wondering about the rules, laws and ethics of copyright theft in shows. If I take someone else's gimmick and make it as my own, have I broken a law or a code. (I am not planning to by the way!) I ask because I found a website promoting a magic act which appears to blatently rip off the gimmick of a band called the Residents. The act's gimmick is the wearing of 'eyeball' mask head pieces. This appears to be a complete copy of the gimmick used by the band. Some of the promo shots on the website also appear to be copies of shots the band has used on their album covers. The Residents have been around for many years and can be found at: http://www.residents.com I don't want to name the act here as I feel it would be inappropriate. Regards Duncan

Even if it's not illegal, it's surely a lack of ethics and a complete lack of creativity. Unless, they didn't know about the Residents. And if they do know, the right thing to do would be to come up with their own original idea.
