A pet peeve of mine. It's not quite a cliche but certainly is something that I hear a lot from performers at all levels from the hobbyist to the TV performer and that's the phrase, "....like so" tagged onto to the end of a sentence.
If you catch yourself saying this in a routine then you know that your patter has reduced itself to merely a bland description of what you are doing. You are telling your audience you are doing what they can see already plainly see you are doing. (eg I put this through there like so; that goes down there like so; etc) So listen out for, "...like so" and if you hear yourself saying it translate it as, "I have nothing interesting to say at this point" and hopefully that will prompt you into doing something about it. Eliminating the phrase, "...like so" is one of the easiest and quickest ways to instantly improve your performance. Neal

Absolutely Tim!!! What about the rule that you should dress one step above the audience. If they're in casual, you're in a suit, if ther're in suits, you're in a tux. Not sure though what to do when EVERYONE is in a tux. As you know it happens. Would that be tails? Red Velvet cape? There is still something to be said for going out and looking like a million bucks as apposed to $47.50. A tux is CERTAINLY not hack. (Well, maybe powder blue with big ruffled shirt and a bowtie as bit as your head. Yeah, that's hack.)

I my area, magicians seem to love to say at the conculsion of an effect,... "HOW does he do it? Better question, WHY does he do it? HaHa!"
They think it's a joke, but it's actually a good question. |

It has always made me a little nuts when magii say, "and now, please, for the first time... (and whatever follows)" This "for the first time" always bugged me.

"BOOM!"
That's what I can't stand, I've lost count of how many "trendy" magicians on instructional videos resort to it. I'd be interested to track down the originator of the modern "boom" boom. (and I don't mean Basil Brush, for any fellow UK readers). |

I would add the overuse of "ordinary", as in "what I have here is an ordinary deck of cards"- yeah, right!

Some lines are cliché for the ego of one performer or the other; naturaly not for all of us (otherwise they would have disappeared). The question remains whether they are audience oriented, whether we observe how audiences react to a line, whether we find what answers their anxieties rather than ours... The transfer of worry towards what is good for the audience instead of what is good, in our eyes, for our own image is at the source of good magic. Magic is some form dialogue. It's not a lecture where we have to be brilliant innovators of new ...(whatever: tricks, methods, lines, puns...), it's a dialogue were the imagination of the spectators has to do 50% of the way to meet a magical situation for it to be successful.

Funny, Mandarin!
I was just reading through this thinking "nobody's mentioned mine yet!". And then you ruined it for me...hehe. Seriously though, the minute I hear any magician say "and here I have a perfectly normal (or ordinary) deck of playing cards" - I have to walk away as I'm not very good at controlling myself sometimes.... Cheers. |

Most people in the world have not seen close up magic, in the U.S. probably less than 30 percent of people have seen a close up magician. So to worry about if some of the things you do is clique to laymen is probably a waste of time. Personally I snap my fingers all the time. It is quick, simple and gives a cause and effect relationship laymen look for. I guess I could do a back flip every time a card came to the top of the deck, but that seems a little excessive and it is nice to have a layman snap their fingers to bring the card to the top. There is a clique image of a magician to laymen, but it is pretty easy to shatter.

I agree murphey, all of the greats advise to perform a move to establish something has happened; whether it be a snap of the fingers, a word, or kicking the laymen in the ass (which has crossed my mind a few times).
