Saw Andy do this today and bought it. Realized what it was straight away but also realized how commercial this is. Andy says in the instructions the method is not new (but he has a new twist on it.) Indeed I used it myself as a teenager after been shown it with playing cards and Marlo also used it, but Andy has taken it away from playing cards and added as usual, a great presentation. Basically it is a one in six prediction effect, but like his earlier "Killer Elite" effect, his scripted presentation lifts the effect considerably.
Not for the "straight" mentalist, and more suited to close uppers, anyone who ever read the book "The Dice Man" will know where Andy is coming from. You get six laminated numbered cards which come in their own metal business card case, a bag and a die and two presentations, one about Al Capone's favourite game. Dark humour. This was selling fast. Recommended, and no, I don't sell it and nor am I a close aquaintance of Andy Nyman. Paul. p.s It should be noted Andy had someone dressed as Superman by his stand to frighten off any shoplifters. |

Yeah she was, I asked her "Are you getting bored?" and she whispered "No" despite watching Andy perform for the hundredth time.
Gotta admit though Diceman did scare me a fair bit - more than the super kid(?) Raj |

Are you saying that the Diceman trick is scary (or that the ending is scary), possibly in the same way that The Web is scary. Is it suitable for all audiences?

Umm... it's not scary - the diceman doesn't run after you and beat you up. No, just the effect seems quite impossible for a laymen point of view. I saw people considering a number of methods, and then amazed because the routine seemed never to use any of them.
Andy is a very good salesman, he doesn't stop. He beckoned me over and started the routine straight away... it's very very good. Paul, I was going to introduce myself to you, but you were kinda busy - maybe next time. Raj |

Paul, I was going to introduce myself to you, but you were kinda busy - maybe next time. Me? Busy? It was probably the overflow from Bob Swadling's stand, lol. Nice meeting you too Doogie, hope you enjoy you time in England. Alan, Diceman is not an effect that will make anyone jump like The Web. However, you wouldn't use it for everyone, most people yes, but not everyone. Not suitable for kids or the vicar's tea party. Andy also has some new lecture notes out from his Magic Castle lecture. The "Fight Dirty" notes. Paul. |

Diceman is an effect advertised as ‘close-up for the modern performer’. It promises a ‘lightening fast reset, examinable props, no fake dice, no rough and smooth, no outs and you can perform it within five minutes after opening the package’. Too good to be true? Haven’t we all been here before? Read on.
I have to say that this is a very nice, slick and sophisticated grown-up effect. As Paul has stated, the methodology is not new, but has a fresh and very commercial touch. From the packaging and presentation through to the props, it has been well conceived and feels good to handle. In essence, the performer sets the scene by telling a story where decisions are made and actions are taken on the roll of a die. The spectator is then asked to roll the (ungimmicked) die on the table and whatever random number comes up, the corresponding action is identified on a set of option cards numbered from one to six. If for example, the number three is rolled, the performer tables the card marked three. He also tables the remaining five cards. The spectator turns over the selected card and reads the statement. The performer states that it was a good job that they threw a three and not one of the other cards. The remaining cards are then turned over to reveal a very different and potentially disturbing outcome. It works exactly as I have described it. No sleights and very clean handling. The spectator can turn over the cards. Nyman thoughtfully provides two alternative scripts. The second one is perhaps more useful for general performances than the first which was based around a novel of the same name. To do the first routine convincingly, you will need to read the novel. Neither routine is suitable for Sunday School gatherings or young children. The strength of this effect like all good magic or mentalism, rests squarely on the skill of the performer and the assurance of his or her presentation. It will certainly enhance the outcome if attention is paid to the storyline and if the performer can heighten the sense of drama, it will increase the impact of the ending. It is also worth building your own story or scenario thus making the effect distinctively yours. Diceman can be performed just about anywhere, but do take the time set the scene in order to maximize the overall impact. To conclude, Diceman is different, refreshingly inventive, simple and definitely worth purchasing.

So, what am I missing on this one?
I ordered it and am waiting for a miracle to arrive. Any further thoughts on this effect? Just what are they leaving out of the description? I don't want to have too high of expectations when this arrives.

I bought this recently and am very impressed. The overall quality and presentation of the product is excellent. I've only had a couple of runs with it so far but the initial response is good! As for what's left out of the description.... well, nothing really, although I'm not so sure how practical the reset would be for say, strolling restaurant work for example, but the reset is quick.

I just received mine from Hank Lee's. This effect is great. And wow is it clean. The fact that the spectator can turn over the cards makes it basically an examinable, slight free "6" card brainwave. Read the effect description at Hank Lee's hot items. It plays exactly as described. I was way off on the method. I've bought other effects using this gimmick, but never in this way. It's ingenious. This is the kind of effect that will fry magicians and laymen. And amazingly, with a private reset, you can repeat it. Killer stuff.
While it's a bit pricey for what you get, I give it a rare 10 out of 10.

...If the 'Dice Man' logo was removed then I would score it highly. Adding this insignia to the metal case and cards seems a little odd and reduces its overall appearance to something purchased in a toy/joke shop. The effect however remains very strong.

I am glad to see a review of this effect posted. I was shown this effect the last time I visited Hollywood Magic (out here in L.A.) right before Christmas and I remember thinking, Oh, it's just a gaffed die and a normal one palmed to switch with, but cute and original story, etc. Now I am rethinking it and someone here has said it does NOT contain any fake dice.
Maybe I will take another look at it. Like I need another "close-up miracle trick"!!! GlenD

No, the die is not gaffed. And the spectator turns the cards over himself. Two very strong points.
One piece of advice though: Do the effect. Let it sink in. Then put everything away and move on to another effect. Very smart handling.

I've had great success with this. This effect really is all in the presentation, and if you can't tell a good story it may not be for you. This is the first thing I've bought from Andy and I'm impressed.

1magicshop.com is selling it at the cheapest price! Hehehe, I brought it to their notice that someone was selling for $26.95 and they reduced theirs to $25.95.
Now that's WICKED service! I'm ordering from them! They will reduce their price not just for an individual but for the whole community. People really should check them out! Cheers, Logan

Yeah, I agree about the annoying diceman logo on the box and cards. It does look a bit like a child's party effect. Nevertheless, the trick is just so good, and undoubtedly would look great if the dice numbers were substituted for ESP symbols.

Hey, just a thought I wanted to bring up, maybe there are threads already about this, but:
I am all in favor of getting the best deals and saving money, etc. But I also am fortunate to have a magic shop local to me. I consider the owner and magician there as my friend and when I am considering ordering something online, I usually check to see if he has it or can get it from the distributors, etc., that he uses. I get a discount from him, one of the perks for taking his magic course. Even if I pay a little more for an item, I feel that it is worth it to support him not to mention the fact that he may share ideas for presentation or whatever. The value of having local shops with real people in them is of more value to me than saving a few Pennies or even a few bucks. Not bagging on anyone for getting the best deal and I know that not everyone has a local magic shop to support or visit... just sharing a thought is all. Peace out, GlenD

I agree with GlenD!
Although I'm staying in Brunei, there is one local magic shop (in S'pore) which I truly support and go to buy magic items whenever I can. He doesn't have much, but he is very skilled and a kind and humble man. The poor guy doesn't even have a credit card machine so you have to pay by cash. I really like to support him because although he doesn't have much, he offers good prices and is a nice guy. Unfortunately in Brunei, there aren't any magic shops, so 1magicshop.com is the one for me at the moment! Cheers, Logan

This is great. I used it in an interview last week with a work-related patter presentation... i.e. I became so frustrated with the team on one project, that I decided to project manage by numbers. I got the idea from a novel called "The Diceman". I'd let the gods decide how to run the project. Here, I'll show you how I do it...
