Well I have been looking into the 3 shell game and I am interested in it very much. Now I would plan on buying the street shells from SFS but I was wondering what are some good instructional DVDs for the 3 shell game. I have done some searches and I have read that Sal "The Hit Man" Piacente has a nice one. How are the DVDs from SFS?

I first bought Piacente's DVD. It's OK and it will teach you the moves OK (don't fall for all that wiseguy stuff - it's hype to sell).
I have also bought the S4S DVD. This is excellent. In addition you have some wonderful footage of Bob Sheets and a talk from Whit Haydon (sp?) at the end. The way Sheets treats his audience is an object lesson in how to trick people without insulting them and having them love you depite their being fooled. Whit also gives a wonderful talk on the same lines and about getting them involved in the routine.
From what I have seen of any S4S stuff so far they should be enshrined as a national treasure for their quality.

I don't work for S4S, but I have to say that I think their DVD on the shell game, as well as the rest of the products I have purchased from them are the best.

The S4S DVD on the Shell Game gets you from square 1 to the middle of the board. There are things on that DVD that you will not find on any other DVD.

Whit Haydn has a series of "maneuvers" which are, to my knowledge, original with him. They add a lot to the visual appeal of the game.

I cant tell you from experience, but I've heard that the School for Scoundrels has a nice DVD on it. Whit Haydn also had nice things to say about Bob Sheets' Absolutely Nuts! DVD:

Just my 2 cents...

I haven't seen Bob Kohler's video yet. I don't think it's out on DVD yet, but I'm sure it's a matter of time before he transfers it over. I hear that it's very good.

I have several others, though.

I would rate them

1) S4S Three Shell Game
2) Bob Sheets' Absolutely Nuts, Phil Cass DVD
3) Patrick Page DVD -- (It's a good DVD, though -- it has some excellent topit work on it.)
4) Sal Piacente's DVD.

Once you have the first four, you don't need the last one. Nothing against Sal. Just hard facts.

I have Kohler's video and can attest to it's greatness.
It's a very structured routine with good psychology.
Not much work on "outs" but good advice on crowd management which is quite important.

I have all the others as well.

Sal's is ok but the others have lots of details and extra info
required for real spectators.

This points out something very important. When you decide to learn something new, don't just get one DVD. Get every one you can get your hands on. They are much better than the older videotapes used to be, by and large. Some of the older videotapes were excellent, and they have been remastered into DVD's -- but the DVD gives you a format that is almost like having a lecturer in your living room.

Phil cass--the pea and shell game DVD. Its a great DVD on the psychology of the swindle. He has limited sleights but his method of engaging the spectator does the work. Its definately worth checking it out, and it adds to the SFS shell game DVD.

I ditto Art and Frank. Phil Cass and Bob Kohler are two of the best shell guys out there. Sal Picante is good, basic shell work. Patrick Page is king, Whit's OK and I'm still learning. bob.

Does anyone know if the older phil Cass video has the same presentation as his
DVD?

apparently the video has some TT work, as well. I did not see that on the DVD?

Also don't forget upcoming special guest of honor Eric De Camps who is a monster shell operator. He is uncanny. Don't forget to pick his brain to the skull about his work on the shells.

Ok.... I watched the Phil Cass video (not DVD) this evening.

Here's my take:

1. This is NOT for beginners

2. His personna was a bit abrasive at first but I learned to enjoy him by the end.
Perhaps this was on purpose. He seemed not to fit himself at the start of the video but as videos go.. I don't put much weight on that.

3. The routine is apparently his presentation for Gary Ouellet's Supershells routine.

4. There are just a few phases to the routine so it's easy to learn the moves.

5. This video will NOT get you out there working the shells. The focus is on psychology and talking the spectator into choosing the shell you want them to pick.
Very interesting stuff. VERY! But not for beginners.

6. This is a must have video/dvd for experienced shell workers.

7. The finale is absolutely astounding. I was literally on the edge of my seat, laughing and clapping and waiting for the sucker to take the bait. But this will take work, practice, timing, and the things that advanced workers will be able to handle after doing other stuff first for real audiences. I was quite impressed.

My suggestion for the shells based on what I've seen:
Get all the media you can afford but make sure you get:
Patrick Page - easiest to learn and something for the ladies
Kohler - the most structered and a great finale. I do this routine.
SFS - additions, ideas, routines, history and more to come on other DVDs
Sheets - work on extra peas and the sheets acquitement
Cass - Psychology, tension, emotional hooks, and the great finale

No need to get the picante DVD if you've got these. save your money.
It's ok but does not offer anything these do not.

Charlie Frye - great patter, devious use of a poker chip. A unique ending.

For shells, get the La Maggiore shells or the SFS
street shells and you'll be happy.
Even the vernet shells work fine. Just not as fun to use.

Mark you are correct. It's a must-have.

So, (not to belabor the point) last night I made my wife sit thru the
Phil Cass presentation which takes about 10 minutes (I'm guessing).

I usually cannot get her to agree to 2 minutes of magic and so I never ask for her
attention to anything magic related. Something made me feel that she'd watch this.
I was right.

She was clinging to every word. Completely silent and watched the whole thing without blinking. Studying, following, watching.... and closely.

This is the only offering I've seen where the emotional hook was real. The audience was truly emotionally committed to the outcome of the routine. And the finale left nothing to be desired. Phil made the situation so tense that it was almost comical.

I don't think you can buy this tape/DVD and do it on its own. You need more of the basics that the SFS and kohler's routines provide. these will give you the confidence to do the routine and understand spectator reactions.

the Cass tape takes the whole game to a new level. This routine creates tension in everyone watching. My palms were sweaty and I had already watched the whole thing once. When was the last time you had your entire close-up audience on the edge of their seat with sweaty palms?

You cannot compare this with other shell videos. It's something completely different. Not better, as I don't think it gives you enough of the basics but once you're comfortable with your routine and want to kick it into another level and you want to know what that level can be like..... this is it.

PM me for details. I promise I won't write more publicly about it... unless provoked Smile
