There have been a few posts about this in the e-book section but for those who don't know about it, the new collection of card magic compiled by Peter Duffie is really excellent. There are some wonderful effects and sleights in the book. It's available at peterduffie.com.

Even though I'm returning to magic after a 30 year layoff and am focusing on the classics (Giobbi's Card College, Royal Road, Expert Card Technique, etc) I often purchase contemporary card material to try and get 'into the head' of the creator.
I think understanding how other compose, construct and present their work can be helpful, if nothing else it gives you some perspective on work. Not that you'll copy it but its a reference to compare to your own work. I recently downloaded a copy of Scotland Up Close which had received many good reviews on the Café. My blog, http://www.poolside-reflections.blogspot.com provides a link on how you can download an inexpensive copy of book. As a beginner it has some material which can be added to working inventory but more importantly you can get some perspective on how multiple Scottish cardmen think and work. If a beginner can be so bold, I recommend you check it out especially at such a low price.

Scotland Up Close is a fantastic ebook. I do Roy Walton's Autograph Hunter. It's a strong effect and plays very well with layman. I would definitely recommend this ebook.

Any Effect Is Possible, methods are relativley easy to come by, but it is the effect that takes true courage to come up with

Autograph Hunter is awesome! Then again, anything with Mr Walton's name on is incredible.
