For what conditions? What size show? Where do you perform? Who are you gonna levitate? Is a suspension up for consideration?

The most practical are two boards, a pair of shoes and a cloth. Costs nothing, is extremly funny if done right and can be performed just about anywhere.

I like the one where you just snap your fingers and lift off into the air without wires, bars, magnets, or anti-gravity devices. I'm still working on it. So far I can get up a few feet, but then I come right back down again. Bummer!

Sethman,
I'm just finishing up work on a new levitation to put out onto the market. It's portable, practical, and very deceptive. It's a standing levitation which can be performed in doors or out, with or without a stage, and does not need a backdrop. I'm currently in the process of looking for a builder for this particular illusion, after which time there is no doubt in my mind that this will become one of the most popular levitations around. I'll be sure to put up a post with more information when I have solidified who the builder will be. That being said, if there are any builders out there willing to take on a large project such as this one, please do contact me. Also, from what I hear, the MultiPurpose levitation is great! Spellbinder, I bet your levitation is very brief. I think Micheal Jordan had one of the better performances of that particular version.

The Mult-Purpose levitation requres a stage, a backdrop, and a Stage hand. Because of those requirements it doesn't fit practical. My response above was cheap and practical.

I still contend that practical requires more information. It may not be pratical to do the poles with shoes levitation in his program. He may be stuck with a suspension or he may need something more involved. (Most cases your suggestion is great for a low [no] budget program. Something good for a entry level program.) I'ld like more info myself.

This levitation can bring you at least 12-18 inches high. I am confident that you can rise much higher but I personally think that the effect will be stronger with a 12-18 inch rise. It just seems more believable.
Essentially the apparatus will be in full view of the audience the entire time without the least bit of suspicion, as it is built into the most innocent thing imaginable. I have designed this with the hope that everyone from buskers to stage performers will be able to use it. Honestly, I can't wait to get the first version built so that I may incorperate it into my own shows. I'm trying not to give away too much at this time as I do not want to make too many promises too early on. As I get closer to launching this project, I will release more information. Cheers! - Chris.

I guess my definition of practical would be the easy to set up and take down, and would be great illusion for most situations. Sometime within the next year or so I want to start performing at fairs, cruises ships, etc, and would like to include a levitation. I hope this helps out a bit.

You are kinda asking what card trick to learn so that you could perform it for a group of people. Well, why not learn them all... or at least more than a handfull. So, why not learn all the levs on the market? You will gain not only some great alternatives especially when challenged by the crowd, angles or situations... but also be able to switch to another one instantly to show that what the people think they saw, well, they haven't seen anything yet!!!
There are King Rising, Balducci and Zero Gravity just to name a few. Then do this one last...the Icarus Effect. Oh, there might be a problem with trying to do them all in one sitting... but I guess you will be the judge on that one once you learn them all. |

Sorry I should have been more clear. I'm not really in to self-levitations. I'm looking for something to do on stage. Thanks.

Now you are focusing on something more concrete. Do you want to levitate...
Pick an object you want to float:_______________________ List the Criteria: (surrounded, Stage, close-up, Angle-free, weight limitations, price limitations) Pick a support method: Practical: 1. concealed or disguised supports 2. invisible supports. Impractical: magnetic repulsion, where the weight is not too great, or atmospheric pressure. According to Fitzkee there are only so many way to levitate a person: (See "The Trick Brain" for a complete understanding of this topic)
Increased weight requires a counter weight through motorized methods or counterbalancing. Concealment of method limits use because of angles. Levitation from Chair, Vertical Levitation, Horizontal Levitation, Levitate and vanish. Obviously, to pinpoint what you want, you need to define exactly what you want to accomplish. You specifically mentioned Levitation and not Suspensions, so some form of movement up and down is required. Easy to set-up and take down is a broad statement. Many of the major Levitations: Gamalo, Multi-Purpose Levitation, Simplex Levitation, fit that defination. They all weigh in at about 100 lbs plus carrying case. Some use AC, some use DC, or use manpower. Quite simply, describe in detail exactly what you want to do and with what/whom, price range, weight limitations, angles, motorized or not, and just maybe you will get the answer you are looking for. The Above is a detailed thought process of developing a levitation There are no secrets exposed here, just applied scientific principles of vertical movement. Dennis

Now we are getting somewhere! These guys on the Café are great but you have to give them some insight as to what to work with. Dennis is right on. I was hoping to spark this line of thought in sethman. Dennis great post.
What is practical and magical greatly depends on your show and surroundings. To fourwinds a self levi. is practical To Dennis a compact assist. levi. is practical To Chris building a levi. to fit his show and transport needs is practical To me a levi. that lends itself to my story is practical. You need to re read Dennis' post and search your brain for where your show is going. What is practical now may not fit your show in 6 months, a year or (as we all find with some of our great ideas) something we love is never practical. It sounds like you are searching for advice on the start of your magical development. This is a great place to find it. These guys are terrific. Just find out who your magical character is and what your show is to mean. Keep seeking advice and learning and you will find what is practical for you. Good luck and keep us posted on what you find.
