I am considering purchasing the blueprints for the illusion called, "The New Disembodied," but I am concerned on its difficulty level in performance. I have seen this illusion performed before by David Copperfield on his China special and was completely amazed by it, even though I have a pretty good idea how it was done. Does this illusion require any fake body parts? Does it require a flexible assistant? In the description of the illusion, it says that it can not be performed surrounded, but how about up-close? I would appreciate any input.

I have not seen this "NEW" illusion but I have always loved this The Disembodied Illusion.
On Lance Burton DVD, he does a new version of this with himself. An Assistant then craws through his disappeared middle. Nice effect. Owens Magic has a new Disembodied illusion. The illusion does have angle problems and is meant for stage work only. If you choose to do this illusion your assistant need to be the same person all the time. This is why Lance Burton does it himself, a nice touch to the illusion. Other than that, any more information would reveal the secret of this wonderful illusion.

O.k. The Copperfield version e.g. very big round cabinet with shadows & lights... is not practical. Vanbirch has featured it in his show (with DC's blessings)and it is a royal pain.
There are two "common" methods to doing the Disembodied, only one can be done in the round but, it has some drawbacks that have limited it's application. The method was developed by Roy Houston in the 1950s and if I recall, less than a dozen cabinets using that method ever existed... I owned one of them for a short period but prefer the Thayer version. There is also the Larsen method that gives you a real head but fake legs... Oh! I forgot to mention that... yep! there are body parts! If you don't have a good head, you'll destroy the effect completely! I know of some guys that have socked as much into the head as they did the cabinet... I had one that was mechanical and even blew a bubble with "her gum"... There are angle concerns but ways of making the cabinet that help safeguard against those problems... Dante's version was awesome for this... I've seen very few that use the wrap-around door system he had, but it's a great way to go in my book! Like any major illusion investment I will stress that you can't do enough research before making the investment... find out all you can including all the methods used for creating the basic effect... find what works best for you. BTW... there is an appearance/transposition effect using a modified Disembodied method that's very futuristic! If anyone's seriously interested, touch base.

Of interest and very pertinent is the fact that Dante's assistant hated doing this illusion. It can be rather uncomfortable for the person losing the guts. Some agility is required!

For a cross between the Disembodied and the Interlude check out the Andrew Mayne book (the latest one) - very easy but clever principle...

To my knowledge Lance is the only person to ever pay Kenny royalties for using said method/presentation.
