Hello everyone,
I know, this topic has probably been beat to death in the past, but I did do a search and really wasn't satisfied so I would like to ask: What sources could you recommend for "self-working" card magic with impact. Let me explain a bit more. I just purchase Green Lite by Lennart Green and I absolutely love it. I'm almost sure this is the style that best fits me (self working table magic I guess you could call it.) This is what I mean by impact. There very entertaining and unique effects, not obvious in other words. Im very skeptical of some marketing books and items on self-working card tricks because Im just affraid they aren't the "impact" material Im looking for. For example Michael Maxwells 3 volume DVD set on self working card tricks. Maybe Im being judgemental, but I just have this gut feeling that Mr. Maxwell isn't going to teach the impact material I would like. I am also aware that there are great self working affects within other sources however is there strickly any source completely dedicated to self working card magic, such as Lennarts Green Lite? If there is a thread I overlooked that might help please link that as well. Otherwise I would appreciate any contributions to the above question. Thanks, Ron Slater |

Any trick can have impact with the right presentation. Trick selection needs to be a personal choice. What works for me may not (and I highly doubt it) work for you.

I think I know what you're getting at. There's a lot of self-working material out there, but not a lot of it is very magical. Check out the work of Fulves and Scarne to be sure, but if you really want the good stuff, get on the Hermetic Press email list and buy Roberto Light by Roberto Giobbi when they publish it (sometime within the next couple of months). That will be of the calibur that you are looking for. There are also many wonderful effects in Royal Road that should not be overlooked.

Self working card tricks by Karl Fulves has someone good material. Paul Harris has published too very good magic self working or almost-self-working (see, v. gr. Overkill).

If you are worried about maxwell's tapes, I'm sure that the material would come off differntly if say dai vernon were doing the routines on those tapes. I personally think the eye of stonehedge on the green lite tape is one of the best self working tricks you could ever do along with john bannon's timely departure from smoke and mirrors. |

Self working card tricks with "IMPACT", The only way to go then would have to be The Card Magic of Nick Trost, or maybe even Effortless Card Magic by Peter Duffie..Also mentioned above was Karl Fulves as well as John Scarne. All the above are fantastic books requiring more sublety then sleights. Just get one and see if you do not agree...

The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......

I love Semi-Auto books .... I think 6 is on the way to the press as we speak .... I think .... so LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT! I also think SACT (Semi-Auotmatic Car Tricks) is the longest series of books of recent history .... minus the Tarbells and Encyclopedia books.

Hello,
Thanks for all the replies. Im happy all of you understood what I meant by impact. Iv'e read through the posts a couple times and there have been books and video's. I'll be completely honest I would rather have a video/DVD over a book. Im just not a book guy. I didn't want to rule out books though therefore I didn't really mention it at first. What Ive gathered so far is this: Overkill: which is availabe in Maxwells new DVD on self-working effects (ironic from my original post, but notice I did say maybe I was being judgemental ) Also available in ETMCM Vol 2,and Paul Harris Stars of Magic Vol 1. Untouched: availabe on ETMCM Vol 4, Aldo Colombini Impromptu Card Magic Vol. 3, and Daryl Does Den Haag Lecture Notes ( I know this isn't a Video like I said but at $7.00 I think I can handle it Devistation: Geoff Williams Magic for Mortals. My only issue here is most of this video is not card tricks and Id being buying it just for this one effect. That was just a summary for my benefit however I do have a couple requests. MagoGregorio, or anyone, could you brief me on the effect of Overkill? tedb, could you explain devistation to me? Thanks a bunch, Ron Slater |

Don't forget pre-deck-ability by Aldo Columbini or jeopardy by Paul Green.. both effects are like variations of Simon Aronsons shufflebored

Iamslow, I am currently using Rain Man (Lennarts take on shuffleboard). If fact, this is the exact kind of impact I was referring too. Are the other variations any different or more or less the same idea?
Thanks, Ron Slater |

Daryl's Dream a Card, Any Card and Fogel's Triple Prediction are two that serve me extremely well; they use the same principle to achieve seemingly very different results. Two days ago while doing strolling, close-up at an open house I performed the latter at one table, and the reaction was over-the-top. They asked me to repeat the effect with a second spectator and I got high fives all around when I did.
The former can be found in Magic for Dummies, the latter in Eugene Burger's Mastering the Art of Magic. |

Jay sankey's in a flash is an exellent card trick if you want impact, I don't think it is considered self working but the handling is so unbelievably easy and the reaction of spectators is amazing, one of my all time favorite tricks.

I don't know. In a Flash is OK, but flash paper is so passe and cliched. Especially when you have to light it with a match! It has always struck me as just awkward and incongruous to use flash paper on the one hand, which is a surprising and interesting visual, but then struggle like a mortal striking the match on the matchbook.

As suggested above, I am certainly going to check out dead reckoning after seeing the clip on magicvideodepot. It is in Bannon's new book and although I didn't want to buy a book, I may reconsider. Thanks for the recommendation.
Alejandro Peterson, could you describe Ultimate Fate please. Thanks, Ron Slater |
