Have any of you experimented with doing an Erdnase Color Change with open fingers? It is really beautiful and more visual than the standard change. The spectators can see the card the whole time up to the point where the card changes.

Very good!

My variation on your method :

If you hold the deck more vertically, you don't need to cover the face completely. The card drops with its weight. Shake right hand over the face and the face changes.

Jose De La Torre has a great method for this kind of change in his book Real Magic.

There are many many color changes from the top of a deck with open hands, but they aren't really the Erdnase color change... the open handed part changes the handling so it isn't the erndase anymore.

Hideo: Nice variation. It looks awesome.

Daegs: It's still the Erdnase Color Change, only difference is the fingers are open. It's a subtlety, and the method/handling of changing the card is exactly the same.

There's not a link. I was just messing around with cards a couple years ago and experimented with doing an Erdnase Color Change without the fingers closed. I was seeing if anyone else on here has seen it done or has tried it themselves.

If you want to see the ultimate variation of the erdnase change, if you could call it a variation, is by Boston magician Harry Levine. It is called the hurricane change and is published in trapdoor magazine. Just imagine an open handed erdanase change but diagonally backwards.

After practicing this for a while, I started to think this is better than the original Erdnase/Houdini change if used as a color change.

Hideo, I have seen Jack Parker apply that gravity idea before for the cloud change on tsd. Not sure if it is original with him.

Sorry, Eric, but I'd have to disagree with you on this. Harry's change is certainly wonderful, but to call it anything but a VERY distant relative of Erdnase is misleading. I guess you kind of agree, since you say "...if you could call it a variation...".

One of the things that makes the Erdnase change so wonderful is the SLOW and gentle approach you should take with it. It is unhurried, feels like you aren't DOING anything. The FEEL of Harry's change is completely different. It is a "fast gun" approach. If this were the Old West, Harry would be "Billy the Kid", and the guy doing Erdnase would be Chester, Matt Dillon's deputy from "Gunsmoke"!

Paul,

My only reason for the reference is that he mentions that his inspiration was a sideways erdnanase change. I don't have the magazine in front of me but I beleive he said Dorian Sagan showed it to him. Why am I telling you this? You are mentioned in the article. You know what I am talking about. I totally agree though on the points you have raised. I only wish I had the privelege to watch Harry perform the Menace from Trapdoor. I can only imagine.

Hey Eric,
The gravity idea is something Jack created with Mark Aspiazu a few years ago. As far as they know (and they are very well-read gentlemen), it's original with them, but it's so hard to be 100% certain in this day and age. They have a bunch of cool applications for it, you should ask them about it!

Take care.

Thanks for the information that the gravity idea already existed.

Hi again, Eric!

That's funny, I don't recall being mentioned at all in that article, though I was certainly working with Harry on several projects at the time. I'd like to know what was written and can't look it up, since I don't have a copy of that issue at hand. Can you PM me the pertinent section? Curiosity, you know...

Thanks, PSC

The move looks beautiful in Jack's hands as dose all of his magic. He and Mark have done more with the move than I had ever considered. If you haven’t seen it yet check out Mark Aspiazu's "Little By Little" on TSD. It is probably the most stunning thing I have seen on the Ambitious card since “Raise Rise”.

Hi,
Could you give the complete reference of the book (or video) you are talking about. Sounds appealing...
Thanks,
Jonathan.

Thanks for the interest and kind words guys. The videos in question were uploaded to TSD some time ago but since a few people expressed an interest I have also put them up on my site.

If you go to www.jacksdeck.com and to the Videos page, scroll down and there's a couple of links down the bottom. "SnowBlind" explores the idea of the "gravity slide" to execute the change. "Little Fluffy Cloud" is a look at combining Robert Moreland's "Cloud Change" with Mark Aspiazu's "Little By Little". As Robert mentioned Mark's concept is superb and is also on video at TheSecondDeal.

Thanks again for the interest

Didn't sankey do this on one of his dvds? He does a routine where he jogs 4 like cards out of the deck then squares the deck and apparently has all four cards in his hand and deck in the other. He then puts these 4 cards at random places in the deck. Then one at a time they come to the top, (all by way of the erdanase, backs out), then after the third card, he flips the top card over, has his hands open so you can see the card and then does the erdanase and there is the 4th card? I am not sure but revolutionary card magic maybe? It's the dvd where he starts out with a minor false cut/flourish. Hope this helps and doesn't confuse.

2 years ago I came up with this change as well. Come to find out that it was Steve Draun's Starfish Change, which has not been mentioned here. Check it out in his book, "Secrets Draun From Underground".
