Sounds good, but how difficult is it to perform? Can it be used in walk around magic, or is it just to slay other magicians in competitions. How long does it take to reset? Does it use your production pad, because I read somewhere that the pad and explosion won some competition at Vegas.
Could you also tell why it is so highly priced without giving away the secret of course.

Dean-

I saw explosion at this years IBM convention in San Diego and I can easily say it is the most magical thing I have ever seen in my life--bar-none.

I really hope that someday in my life I can earn enough skill and obtain the right venue to perform this effect. In my opinion it is easily the most magical thing you can do with coins and probably one of the top 5 magic effects of all time.

Thanks for such great magic. By the way what was your inspiration for the effect?

Thanks for the kind words guys. Yes this trick kills. Especially when you use it at the right time. Timing is everything. It is not good for walk around. You must have a pad to work on. The production pad is not needed for the explosion. It is a self contained effect. Resets instantly. It is high priced for two reasons. It is a highly precisioned set of coins, and I really didn't want this to be in the hands of someone that was not serious. The people who are serious don't mind the price. I like it that way. I have refused to sell it to some people. I am very sensitive about this trick and want it to have a good and loving home. It also takes practice to get it down. Hope I helped, Dean

Dean-

Right on about the explosion price...some effects deserve a special place. Hopefully someday I will earn the right to perform it, but until then I will always remember the first time I saw it. Do you demo it on any of your coin videos so I can show my non-magic friends?

Thanks again-

At the end of Dean's "Coin Magic 2000" video he performs his routine to music.
Honestly, the video doesn't do it justice. In real life in Dean's hands it looks like a miracle. Smile

Explosion is a piece of art.
You are SO right to make the price steep just to keep it out of mere curious hands.
Since last January, Dean, I've performed it maybe about 20 times professionally.
I rehearse it daily and it has become my favourite routine at the moment.

I'm only waiting to get full circle and be able to show you my performance of it.
If not in Holland, then one day at the Shoppe

I would like to hear someone else besides me describe the effect. To see how you perceive it. Dean

Hey Mr. Dill on your intimate miracles do you have coin matrixes on it?

Thanks,
Max

P.S. can you made more than 16 coins appear?

While I too would like to hear someone explain the effects in their own words, certainly wouldn't mind it being Dean himself. But I can understand that he too would like to hear it from another view.

But those who can't wait until someone explains it (I couldn't) there is a nice explanation of Explosion (and all of Deans efffects) on Dean's web site.

check it out.

I'll give a shot at describing it (from my somewhat dim memory - and with help from my wife who's memory helped fill in some of the details):

Dean starts with 4 coins closely spaced on a large close-up pad "objects in a black galaxy - the sun and the moon and some stars". "As the eyes adapt, you begin to see more..." as the coins are moved apart, two more coins appear. "And each star has it's own place in the galaxy" As each of the four coins are slid toward the outer edges of the mat, more coins appear... and more... and more and EXPLOSION of coins until visually the mat is littered with evenly spaced
"stars". Someone noted earlier that there were 16 coins - but it sure seems like more. Every time Dean touches a coin, two more seem to appear.

It is a visually striking piece. Truly art. I watched him perform (parts of) it on three occasions and I found I didn't even WANT to look for clues about how it was done - it was more fascinating to just be awed at the spontaneous creation of coins. Dean's hands were in plain sight the entire time - or so it seemed!

Now Dean perhaps can say what REALLY happened... but perhaps it's best left UNEXPLAINED!

Hello Mr. Dill!

My name is Ferris and I am a 20-year-old magician from France. This is my first post here and let me congratulate everyone for the quality of this board!

People are so right. Explosion is a truly brilliant effect! I would just like to ask a question: Is Mr. Lassen making the necessary gaffed coins for "Explosion"? Since you mentioned the effect used a highly precisioned set of coins, I thought Mr. Lassen would be the man for this job. But I recently heard rumors that he isn't making the coins anymore. But there are a lot of rumors and assumptions in magic so I thought it would be better to check with you directly.

Also, are you still producing the set in Morgan silver dollars with the edges remilled, as in the half-dollar version? I had the opportunity to watch this set in action for a different effect and it was a thing of beauty. Even when burning the coins up close there was nothing to see and the gaffs were just perfect. Even the beautiful hardwood box the coins come in is a piece of art. Well done!

Also, I am a bit concerned about what you wrote: when you say you are willing to sell the effect to serious and worthy coin performers only. Well I already hinted about getting "Explosion" as a gift (The version in Morgan coins with the wooden box and everything- a real nice and pricey gift, I have to say!), but how would you know if I'm
"worthy" or not? Especially considering the fact that I'm living in France and someone may be purchasing the set for me. Do I need to send you a video of me performing or to find references from people you may know here?

Many thanks for your answer and your time, and keep up with the great work, Dean!

Steve, you made it sound great. Made me want to watch it again myself. You are very creative.

Ferris, by reading your post I can feel your passion. It told me enough to consider you as a potential owner of Explosion. You must have seen Dominique do his version. I could tell by your post that it must be him. Maybe I am wrong.

Yes, Todd Lassen was making the coins for awhile. I am having my partner do them now. I do have to say that Todd Lassen is the best at making gaffs. He can make 'em all. The wooden box was made and designed by Todd. We are not duplicating them and will not in the future. We are making expanded shells and the needed gaffs for Explosion. Believe me when I say that we make 'em perfect. Make sure you contact me personally with your questions. Thanks for your interest, Dean

Hello Mr. Dill,

Many thanks for your reply! It is greatly appreciated. I am very glad to know I could qualify to get a set. One more question however (my last one on that topic, I promise!): do your new sets of coins look the exact same as the ones formerly made by Mr. Lassen? Because the set I saw in action was really perfect. Nothing to see from all angles! Also, if I am paying extra money, do you think it is possible to get a set made by Mr. Lassen? Of course I will understand if you say that it is not possible any more. I am just asking because I have been wanting to get a set so bad! I will contact you in private to order a set when everything is ready.

Keep up the great work, Mr Dill!

Respectfully,

Ferris From France (FFF).

Ferris, I can assure you that the quality of the silver dollar sets are exactly the same. There is a major improvement in the works. In fact even I am excited about it. Don't worry my friend, I quarentee my work. Stay tuned, Dean

Mr Dill,

Many thanks for your reply! A major improvement?! Wow, now you got me curious! Does that mean that the coins will be even better than the ones made by Mr Lassen? I can't wait to see the new coins.

Keep up the great work and let us know when you are ready Mr Dill,

Ferris From France (FFF).
