Hi All and a very Merry Chistmas!
I'm back from my travels and whilst away I became a magician! (As well as a professional diver)Whilst on a liveaboard boat one of the guys had a deck of cards...how could I resist? Well I was learning scuba for a couple of months in Thailand and every spare moment it was "Sean, get out your cards man" The moment of realisation for me was that for the first time I was performing for people who were not immediately known to me, they hadn't seen my first trick.. or second. They hadn't seen the first year of trying to find my style. Hadn't clocked the DL's. I could relax and just enjoy it and I could slow wayyyy down - brilliant stuff! Back to topic. just before I left I bought a set of dark cards. I've played around with them and the suggested effects in the booklet, but I'm still not sure. I'm certain this can be a kicker trick, I'd just like some suggestions from anyone familiar with these cards. At the moment I'm starting with an ambitous routine and ending with the dark card effect but the reactions I'm getting are better from the ambitous moves than the ending. Maybe just practice and better routining but I'd like some advice all the same. Cheers and Merry Christmas once more. Sean |

I'd keep the Dark Card away from any routine. I believe the magician by the name of Farmer had a great routine in the instructions. Something about attempting to place the odd red card in the deck next to the signed card and then the red card becomes the signed card. It's brilliant and impossible. But my guess is you won't use the dark card for long. Just a pain in the but and not so practical. Use DL.

Seandixie:
Can you please explain what Dark Cards are? Some of us here on the Magic Café may not be familiar with them. Are they a brand of cards, a routine, a gaffed card or deck? Thank you. Gerard

A dark card is a gimmicked card which allows you to do some cool effects. For example a spectator can pick a card, take it out the deck and sign it. You can then make it change colors and hand it out as a souvenir. Look it up at Hank Lee.

I have six of these. I bought them about 5 years ago at Tannens and I never used them, I guess I just give these another look.

I use the dark card all the time. My approach is "to single out" one card and then embarass "him/her" in front of his peers by having spec. put their mark on him. If we put him back into the deck, and mix him aback omong his peers. When we take a second look, at your mark, he is now either BLUSHING or HIDING UNDER A BLANKET depending on which way it goes... Basically, simple instructions I received with the card BUT a little different story/approach.... Happy Holidays, JPV

Another good use is to have it in the same colored deck on the bottom. It can then be f**ced and cut into the deck completely disappearing. You can then produce a dup from ANYWHERE. It's a nice little trick for beginners and for restaurant workers.

Do a search in the secret sessions area for some creative uses on the Dark Card. I still do a version based on Bob Farmer's The Mystery Card routine in the book. It's almost like anniversary waltz done for one person where the back of the card they signed changes colour, or some kind of time warp effect where they sign a card before they actually pick it from a different deck. Now that I think abot it, more like the latter, in a spectator's mind. It's a great and cheap device to have cards disappear or change backs. Use it sparingly.

Thanks everyone. Gerrard I think Platt answered your question as good as I could. And Brian cheers, I'll search the secret sessions.

The best version I have seen, though I don't know who it is credited to so I might be saying basically the same as someone else, was a version that used a red deck and 1 blue card. The blue card was placed off to 1 side whilst a card was selected from the red deck. The red card was signed and lost back into the deck. The cards were then faro shuffled together, and the blue card then placed into the mix. The cards were squared and immediately spread. The blue card could be seen near the middle. The magician then states that 1 of the cards either side must be the selection, hes has a look, but they aren't so the blue card must have been defective, he turns it over and it is the selection, and the great thing is obviously that it can be given away. The even better thing was that it was instant reset as the blue card that went in is now set up as the next dark card. I though it was brilliant and is now the routine I use

The person who really did a lot of work with the kind of card you are referring to as the Dark Card was Theodore Annemann, back in the early 20th century. I don't remember specifically where the presentation which is closest to the Dark Card's is to be found, but it might be in the Encyclopedia of Card Tricks, by Jean Hugard...

Just wanted to thank Christopher Williams for that little routine. (It's been a couple of months, but I just read it.) That *is* brilliant. Best, David

The Dark Card, in my opinion, isn't just a mere beginner's trick, it is a highly useful weapon to those who know how to exploit it.
Sit down with it for half an hour, and you'll find some amazing things that you can accomplish with it. It's one of the rare tricks that is STILL in my reportoire, since the time I started magic. To me, that says a lot about the effectiveness of a trick. Take care, Logan

I use the dark card for a card in really impossible location effect.
Just that you cant sign the card that's all. But hack, the spec sees it in the deck a moment ago and deal every card onto the table and still cannot find the card they saw, only to have it appear..............

I use it to make a mysterious mark appear on the back of a selection. The routine involves flash paper and the laws of thermodynamics. Lot of fun.

Well I would have to agree it was good about 99 when I was still fresh to all effects, but now that I look at them. its to much of a hassle. I don't see myself re buying and rebuying these. So ill pass.
