Did you say you win every time, nowyouseeitmagic? That is great but make sure you let the spec. wins once or twice too Smile

Hi guys, I also do love The 3 Shell Game. I'm using the Vernet ones and they do fine for me, I did sandpaper them to give that nice and smooth edge which enables me to work in any surface really, of course the smoother the better. Here are some of the great workers on the subject whose I had studyed and put a lot of thinking to improve and build my own routine. I hope it contributes.
- The Manual of The 3 Shell Game by Eddie Joseph( a great old book where I got my first steps in the shell game);
- The Art of Close-Up Magic by Lewis Ganson Vol.1(good insights and full of other stuff);
- Bob Kholer - The Golden 3 Shell Game DVD(nice routined and patter,He uses a shot glass for the finalle);
- Gary Oullet - Vernon Revelations Vol.14 DVD(Gary on his early days,just performace,He uses a little ceramic saucer to cover the shell and a clear glass on top of everything for his finalle);
- Phill Cass - The Pea & Shell Game DVD(nice dude;his routine is all based on the psicological thinking of the game, taking risks every round he builds confidence and trust of the audience; his able to put up almost 30min on this game; he uses a little plastic food container' the ones they serve you in the airplane, they are quiet big for the shells but if you do the move properly you still can get the pea out of it)

The candel holder was a great idea. I picked one up at a thrift store for a quarter. It looks like a shot glass, just a little bit bigger and thicker glass so it should be more durable if dropped by accident.
Thanks

I received my 3 Shells a few days ago from http://www.theambitiouscard.com I am now using La Maggiore Shells. They are a little smaller than the Vernets Shells. One advantage is they can fit in my pockets without looking as bulky. The other advantage because of the smaller size is because it fits perfectly in a shot glass.

I now know what Michiel was talking about in the first post about the (shot) glass. I learned it from Bob Kohler, "The Golden Shells" video. "Shell Game" by School for Scoundrels is a great dvd also.

Nill,
You mention some great sources, but missed one of the best. Al Flosso "Coney Island Fakir" 30+ pages on just the 3 shell game.

Thanks Vinny, and Vandy Grift for the kind words.

The shot glass is an old thing that was used with the shells for a long time. And using the shot glass was old when I started to do the shells. When doing the shot glass move I have found it better to steal the pea out before you cover the shell with the shot glass. Then mix the shells.

I have quite a few moves with the shot glass that are unpublished.

The shot glass ending I use is my own idea and is in a free e-book at my web site and on my DVD-2 tested tricks for table side tricksters.

The Godfather said it! It is in my opinion one of the best if not the best steals. I love that even with a spectator on your bad side, the steal is invisible. Glenn discovered this as a child. Another thing I love about it is the open display when Glenn turns over the shell to show that the pea is not there.

I combine different steals for my shell game, but the Bishop Steal is my main tool.

Glenn's routine is very professional and direct. I love Phill Cass' routine as well. If you visit Mr. Haydn's site, his routine is a master class in audience management and entertainment.

PS I was sessioning with the older magicians who played heavily with the shell game and they did'nt know what I was doing. Performing or sessioning with magicians, I found that combining the Bishop Steal with the standard steals such as the one used by Patrick Page and Phil Cass as a "set up" for those in the know, I was able to use them as decoys. What really matters at the end of the day is that it worked for my lay audiences. The magician fooler was just a bonus. Its nice to be thoughtful once in a while and treat your fellow magicians with a stumpper!

I also enjoyed Glenn's shell game routine. I use different steals during my performance, but I always use Glenn's ending to finsh my routine. Mr. Bishop's shell game routine is simply put: short and sweet. Do any of you have problems in doing the Bishop steal when using the SFS perfect peas? I have a harder time doing the Bishop steal when I use a perfect pea as opposed to a cut up sponge.

Jaybs my friend I worked out the Bishop steal when I was very young - under 10 years old. Back then the only thing that was being used for a pea for magicians - as far as I know was a sponge.

If I use a s4s pea I use different moves - the Bishop steal was not thought out for the perfect pea. It was for the use of the sponge pea.

I may end up doing a shell game/thimble rig DVD with the other moves I do besides the short routine that I already published.

Please do Glenn!

I really love the Bishop steal! I found that I can do the Bishop steal with the perfect peas with ease. I can't wait to see this DVD!

I use the three shell game as a crowd build at times, it works very well.
If you find a glass that fit,s snug over your vernet shells they cant flip.

I use 2 glases in my end routen, a great teaching can be found in Supershells by Gary Ouellet.

We do supply this if your intereated.
