Can someone advise me of the best Birthday/Diary trick and where it may be found?

Any one of these can be made to play strongly:
Michael Close's Birthday Card Trick, Workers 5 (Uses a Simon Aronson idea) Paul Green's Fortune Teller's Book of Days (marketed item) Alex Elmsley's Fate's Datebook (Alex Elmsley's Tahoe Sessions, Vol 4) Which one is best? It all depends on a number of tradeoffs; what's best for me might not be best for you.

The Gordon Diary trick by Paul Gordon. Probably only the one thing he has that I like, no offence to the man, but this is the only routine he has that I like

Daryl's Happy Birthday card from his Fooler Droolers lecture notes. Easy and I use it with great effect.

Thanks for the suggestions. Just to be clear, I'm not talking about a spelling effect, I'm talking about an effect whereby a spectator selects any card and then discovers that the name of their card is written next to their date of birth in the magician's diary.

In each of the effects that I listed above, the basic effect is that a spectator selects any card and then discovers that the name of that card is written next to his/her date of birth in the magician's datebook.

A Date With Destiny by Kenton Knepper can be done with the chart supplied or you can make one up with a datebook. Very nice effect.

Chronologue by Collectors Workshop (now I believe owned by Viking Magic) is in my opinion the best. I've worked with all of the above mentioned with the exception of close's birthday book and Chronologue Kills. It can play for a stand-up show as well as close-up strolling or street type magic. Combining elements of mentalism joined with cards, you can concentrate solely on presentation. I can't recommend it enough (for someone who has no financial interest in the product or company) I've had it and used it for at least 15+ years.

Check out Simon Arinson. In his book Simply Simon there are a few Birthday/Diary type efects. "Happy Birthday" page 96,...."The Calendar Card" page 103,......"Fate" page 249. This is an excellent book. Lots of other great routines that don't require a stack.

Hi Guys,
Fortuneteller's Book of Days (available from L & L Publishing) was developed after seeing Alex Elmsley present his "Dazzle" lecture. His routine, "Fate's Datebook" is a GREAT piece of magic. It shows how clever Mr. Elmsley solved the presentation problems around Vernon's "Trick That Cannot Be Explained". I loved the routine, but did not fell comfortable with the "mechanics". I still wanted to do the trick and was fortunate enough to find my original birthday datebook. I developed my own method that worked for me. The trick has always been a good one for me. When L & L Publishing brought the trick out for me, I had to design a presentation that was easy for even a "newbie". The directions included with the book are the result. Of course, one may do anything from Elmsley's original routine or feel free to do as he or she pleases. The prop itself is a great value at $20.00! I am still surprised that L & L set the price so affordably. Again, one may use it as supplied, or alter (age, etc.) the book to fit a particular performing persona. The other versions discussed above all have their positive aspects. I just happen to like mine. I hope you will enjoy the search. Regards, Paul Green |

If I hadn't already put in the work to develop my own presentation for Michael Close's Birthday Book a number of years ago, I would have chosen Paul Green's Fortuneteller's Book of Days. It's a great routine, L&L provides a very nice prop, and the effect consistently garners a strong audience response. This is just what you'd expect from a real magician who does a lot of work for real people.
For what it's worth, it's also quite a bit easier to master than the Close or Elmsley versions of the effect.

Paul Gordon's version is excellent and his revised routine uses no memory work whatsoever for the Bart Harding stack.
Paul's effect would appear to meet your needs exactly. Quick point - try and get the NEW diary (not the old version many dealers may still have). The new green covered diary is a much better, harder wearing product and the instructions will contain the easy new system for divining the card. No fear of messing up when the 'heat is on' in the real world! I know that for some reason Paul Gordon gets bad press on here from some quarters. Why I don't know (and like him I certainly don't care)! However, this effect of Paul's would definately meet your needs.

I believe Alex Elmsley had an effect called "book of fortune" in the Collected Works of Alex Elmsley volume 1. I played around with it until I had something that worked well for me, frankly I feel how the effect was printed would not really work in the real world, but doesn't take much tinkering with.

The Alex Elmsley Book of Fortunes was put out by Ken Brooke in the very early 70's (May 1973?) and was a good effect. It's also been reproduced in 'The Collected Works of Alex Elmsley' Vol. 1 pages 347-351 - just in case you have the book but have overlooked it. However, it relies upon a stacked deck and I don't know if this is what the original poster was looking for.
