I modified my THIS by adding a wire "S" hook to the tip of the silk where the load is. In this way, it doesn't look as if you were carrying a heavy load in it.

Lou,
That is a good professional tip. I've used a fishing swivel to allow the same movement. (But if you look in my magic tool box you'll find that I use them for a lot of movement problems. I like the ease of "hooking and unhooking" too for many tricks. Dancing Cane is one that can often benefit from that little change.) The (Improved) THIS should not have the problem to begin with. But I have certainly used that solution with the cheaper serger hemmed silks THIS was made of in the 80s that had to be reinforced with floral wire if your really used it much. (And, of course, that left them stiff as denim.) You always have great ideas and suggestions! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

We're going to have a teaching DVD for THIS when you purchase the product from http://www.silkmagic.biz . Bob and I filmed him teaching ME how to do it from scratch, since I have never done the effect before. It's just like him teaching you, because I'm sure you'll have the same questions.
The teaching DVD should be out the first of March. Don't expect good acting skills in this DVD, or a high quality production. It's just him teaching me how to do THIS! Rick |

Ricker,
"Don't expect good acting skills..." There goes my Hollywood career! And I was holding out to be Paris Hilton's co-star! LOL Actually, this DVD should be as close to a real one-on-one lesson as it gets. It was totally unrehearsed, unscripted and contains no acting! It was in Rick's office with Rick! It is also using the THIS (Improved). (Now I know why we used an empty champagne bottle and a spring animal. No guns!) What a hungry magician won't do for a TGIF Bacon Cheeseburger! Enjoy! Hi, Bob!
A couple of months ago you had mentioned a plan to produce "five DVDs to be sold separately or with the props. They are not just prop instructions but routines for shows using these with other props as the show transitions from trick to trick and making use of what is left." Is this the first of that DVD series: "Routining THIS"? Jimmy

Jimmy,
Yes, you are correct. There is a group of products in the making to give the magician routining help using silk props and others to transition from one effect to the next in their shows. The one Rick mentions above is not among them. However, this one will come with props. The DVD done with Rick this week and discussed above was product specific to actually be part of the offering with the THIS (Improved) sold by Silk Magic Dot Biz (Rick). It does make the offering from Rick unique. Silk props rarely come with DVD instructions and especially that are real-time instruction for someone actually learning the trick for the first time. It certainly is better than getting just the prop or the prop and written instructions. Although I am proud of my written instructions, I will be the first to admit that these instructions had to solve the learner's problems in dealing with the prop. I have not seen the final edits, but I know that there are some routining suggestions made (even with weights and measures) on the raw takes. It even covers using the assistant and progressing to use the silks from THIS (Improved) or the production(s) from THIS (Improved) to continue the show. I hope the part with the spring animal’s tail is left in the DVD. It illustrates a point that no one would believe in print. Rick will likely keep us posted. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Sorry folks! We never got this done.
Perhaps we should try again. I won't even get to use THIS (Improved) again until tonight in Charleston, SC. LOL! (Tonight it is with doves.) It is one of the most versatile props I own. Rarely is it not in the show. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Sounds like a good plan, Bob. I hope you do.
I will be using THIS (Improved) in two weeks, Bob. Still trying to work out the details (will be doing a couple of school shows). I feel like the prodigal son. LOL. Trying to get back into magic (at least in a minimal way) after a handful of years being away. Jimmy

Jimmy,
Welcome back to the world of magic! We've missed you. April I should be up your way. Let's do a THIS (Improved) lecture for your magic club. I haven't done one since Tuesday! We had fun in Charleston, SC. Are you still doing multiple umbrellas from yours? Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Thank you for the warm welcome, Bob.
Yes, I will be doing multiple umbrellas from mine as well as a couple of long, silk streamers or Line of Silks (leaning towards the latter) --- all DoveLite Products! Jimmy

Jimmy,
I think you could get both in the THIS (Improved). Usually I have a bottle of wine, the 18" Line of Silks and a deck of cards in mine. (Sometimes there is 8' of rope instead of a deck of cards.) The 12" size certainly will fit. That size is about as large as a comedy club (20') stage can handle. The 18" size line of Silk is perfect for the 36' stage you find in most schools. Of course, there is also the 24" size for stages 48' and larger. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I use the DoveLite (Improved) THIS, with a small modification. I stitched the corner of the load bag, such that it forms a cone, where I can insert my thumb. As long as my thumb is pointed up, I can hold onto the load. When I grab the bottom corners with the left hand, and release the silks with the right hand, I don't leave anything dangling that will draw unwanted attention.

Hmm, I may give that a try, Alan. Do you find that is more comfortable than using the TT?

Remember that the middle corners on all the silks should meet at the same place. (You don't want to show high and low corners.)
This week we use Mardi Gras colors down here (Green, Purple and Gold!) Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- Lately people in California and New York are adding a forth 24" silk to these sets. It looks good! |

I purchased them this past year from Bob Sanders (the THIS Improved and the umbrellas as well) and wasn't sure what I paid for each item and will be selling them on the Café soon. So, I have also pm'ed Bob to see what he sells them for to help jog my memory - as I paid by check (with is rare these days and don't have it near to see what the amount was). Hope that clarifies. Chad, I guess I misunderstand because you not very clear in your discriptions.
If you have the 'Magic Hands' German parasol production of 5 umbrellas that is supplied with the This effect, that is totally different. Or, are you saying you have a This silk production and purchased some parasols separately. There is a difference, and how you discribe it. If you are saying you got the This from Bob Sanders and want to know how much they now cost, them simply email or PM Bob and he will be glad, I am sure, to send you a price list. |

Got THIS Improved for sale along with 4 umbrellas also purchased from Bob this past year in the 4 sale section. Never used them in a performance, just a couple of practices. If you go take a look and have questions or want to make an offer just pm me.
Having watched Bob's performance at a magic club of THIS you can really do a lot of stuff with it - in the past I have used these type of productions to produce my tarantula and scorpion. Gets a great reaction. Chad |
