I personally think he is a good refreshment from David Blaine. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Blaine, but Criss Angel's magic is some really good stuff, and he also has a GREAT performing ability (I think). I found his trash can "escape" or whatever you want to call it, pretty darn good. And I loved his cigarette vanish. I recently learned that same effect actually. I have yet to use it, but when the chance comes, it'll be great. But overall, I think he's got a great style.
Coming soon... Who knows!

No offence to him, but he scared the begeber's out of my kid... I won't be allowing his performances to be watched around them anymore.

Personally, I don't care for Chris Angel. Not trying to be mean or anything but his big stage shows (I feel) are less magical than tricks that are up in your face like David Blaine's tricks.
PS: No hard feelings |

HE is ok. One thing that that is kinda sloppy is his classic force. It was really noticiable, but I guess a spectator would not know.

Criss Angel is a genius. His stage show is a post apocalyptic venture into wildness, the likes of which have never been seen before in magic. (<-- period)
His use of lighting, stagecraft, and a hard pounding, industrial, punk, rock, soundtrack to create drama is just flipping amazing. He does classic stage illusions presented in such a unique fashion that his audience has no idea that they have seen them done 9000 times before on TV to bad cha-cha music. Original, original, original!!!!!! This guys is an honest to God trailblazer. He is a renaissance man, and he knows what he doing. This being said, it hurts me to say his special was horrendous. God, I hated it. He is SO much better than being just another David Blaine knock off. It killed me. Maybe he had to pitch it this way to get the air time. I don’t know. I will say this, if he had just filmed his stage show and maybe tossed in the water torture cell as a blow off, we would be talking about little else on this forum for a week. It seemed like a marketing ploy to promote his stage show and not just a way to cash in. I think that was smart. If it gets butts into seats for his live show, and it works, then it was a job well done. This guy single handedly made me believe that classic illusions could still be fresh and enjoy a new life. If you live in the NYC area GO SEE THIS SHOW!!!!!!! It is NOTHING like the special. You will ‘get’ the whole goth thing. It won’t seem so out of context. I liked the girl levitation, but I was wondering if it was one of those "made for TV" effects or if it can actually be done by a surrounded street performer (with an assistant).

People beat up Blaine for using a camera trick but in my mind, he presented that trick exactally as people perceive it in the real world. Because the levitation has been so widly exposed now it has lost some of its punch to us. But, I will tell you that that levitation is the kind of things that bad people start new religions with. Before the Blaine special it was the trick I did to just floor people, and it worked. Done correctly there is no possible explanation. They PERCIEVE both feet coming off the ground. Criss Angel's levitation did the same thing. It was a matter of perception. TV just does not bear the scrutany that a live performance can. So in order to do some new really great tricks for us, sometimes you might have to cheat a little. I will say that if it was a for TV trick, it was not as obvious as some of the others I've seen. I know here in my work several people came up to me and that was the trick they rememberd, and liked. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! Alot of people have compared David Blaine to Criss Angel. In a way they are very much the same. They both have had specials doing magic, and both of them do the magic to people on the streets. Other than that, they are completely different performers. I recently read David Blaine's new book and was very impressed. Back in 97 when Blaine first came out, he inspired me to do magic. 5 years later I have a stronger grasp on magic and performing and now know thats not how I want to perform. In his book, he opens himself up and you find out why he does the things he does, and how that is his performing persona. That is his presentation. Now, why such a long spill on Blaine whenever this thread is about Chriss Angel? Because after I understood Blaines motivation, it was easier to understand Angel's. It may not be his performing style, but if thats the style of magic that has been popular for television over the past few years, then why not go with what works. Now his foot is in the door with a small following of people who saw his special. Maybe ABC will pick up his next special (if he decides to do one) and it can get more play than on the family channel. Dont get me wrong, family channel is a great network, but they have played WGM into the ground. Perhaps his next special could be the real stuff from his stage shows, then we can begin to truly understand the man behind the goth.

My opinions on Criss are changing pretty much constantly. I think muchof the magic he doesis really nice. And from what I've seen his stage show looks really different. He has a very firm opinion about what he wants from magic many of his opinions I agree with. However I also feel that he can be a little bit "heavy" I don't feel like I could watch him for too long as it would all be bit too much. The other dislike that I have of Criss's is his views on other magicians and also the way every single stunt he pumps up to the fullest saying things like "Houdini couldn't of done this"
He is however a undeniably good showman and is doing wopnders for the art. I wish him luck. Nick |

I never saw Criss Angels Stage show, so I can't make judgements about that.
I personally don't like his personality in his close up specials. Also the effects he performs are really beatiful but, but I have the feeling it isn;t really ' pure' . I had that feeling when watching David Blaines first special. All things he did were so pure and magical (exept for the levitaion at the end). I really had the feeling this guy was the real thing (I wasn't into magic at the time). |

Criss has brought a lot of attention to art of Magic once again. I have shown his shows to many lay people who are amazed! I like his style and most of his effects. I am not crazy for the stunts... but the Magic I really do appreciate. I also am a David Blaine fan for many of the same reasons. Again, not a fan of the stunts. Frozen in Ice, Pole standing etc. Just personal preference I guess. However, I appreciate the attention they both bring to Magic.
Both Criss and Blaine receive a lot of negative comments for one reason or another by magicians but there sure is a lot of talk in the Café trying to get answers regarding their effects. Sometimes by the same folks who are criticizing. To each their own I guess.... Bobby |

Sorry Mario--I thought you were making a joke. On this side of the pond, the magic magazines were awash for months with images of Criss Angel flying over the desert suspended by lines attached with hooks to the skin on his back. Yes you read that right. Is that busking? Depends on how you define a "sidewalk" and a "hat" I guess......you are right about the hair.

No, no I am sorry your right I am making a joke because I don't know him. Is Criss or David buskers? No, not in any way, does that take away from what they do? No, not in any way. David Blane I don't care for I think he is lifeless as a performer. I think his production team are first class, they can take his stuff and make it look good. The foucus is on his tricks for good reason. Who wants to watch a guy that looks like he is waiting for a bus. Has he ever done his own live stage show I wounder? Saying all of that, I have ended up with a very rare nice cartoon like posters of him in the block of ICE. Which is signed by him, I am open to offers. As for Criss I will keep my eye,s open for a low flying hippy, untill then or I know is he has got long hair, does strange things in the Desert. Sounds like a Sideshow performer? Funny thing about him is that I could stock his DVD for you. Mario |

It doesn't matter how good or bad the magic is, or whether or not any "real magician" would do it that way. Chris and David have brought a lot of popularity back to magic and magicians, more young people are in magic stores buying tricks and getting into magic, and lots of magicians are finding bookings because of these two guys performances on TV. Anything that promotes interest in magic I'm all for, regardless of their style, method, use of stooges, camera cut aways, or what ever. It is all promotion in show business, and these two guys have shown they know how to promote, I hope there are a hundred more of them on the airwaves next year.

Personally, I know Criss Angel has a pretty amazing stage show. I've seen parts of it in old specials, HOWEVER, (note how big this 'however' is) he is a complete knock off of David Blaine. Everything David Blaine does, or did, on his tv specials it seems as though Mr. Angel is trying to do 'bigger and better' for his. Examples included, but are not limited to...
David Blaine pulls a garden snake out of a kids backpack...Criss Angel pulls out a boa constrictor from someones backpack. David Blaine bites an end off of a quarter, Criss Angel eats one and cuts it out of his arm. David Blaine levitates a foot or two, Criss Angel levitates 2 stories. All of this is just lame. Do something different. When his specials finally do build to a gigantic climax, I'm frequently let down by the lameness of it all. Criss gets buried alive, and at the last second comes out of it alive (but not quite as dirty as one would think of with the rain and all). Criss gets put into the woodchipper, comes out alive (but we see blood and bone, etc. so you can be really confused). I see both of these as lame. I just do. AH! And lets not go into the signed Criss Angel calender at my local magic shop, that makes Brokeback Mountain look like a John Wayne movie. I guess there is a reason why vanity is a sin, or considered one if you believe such things. All of these above examples add to the fact that I'm never quite sure how to take him. Sometimes venomously serious. Sometimes highly comedic. Sometimes overly dramatic...so most of the time, I don't know who, or what I'm dealing with or what to expect from him. After seeing his special, I often wonder why he needs to fly or drive anywhere, cause if I could really fly around, I just would, you know? I could literally go on for hours on this stuff, but, I was curious if anyone has thought of or even has the same opinion as me. And thanks for posting this, cuase I'm real curious! |

I must admit I like almost everything Chriss Angel does up to the sick stuff. I am a fan of his style up to hanging under a Helicopter on meat hooks. that's about as magical as being locked in a clear plastic box for 45 days.... I know he likes to shock people but I think he loses more than he gains with that stuff. Its not magic! Maybe he want to be a Hollywood stuntman. Ok, fine but that isn't magic. I like the guy and his work other than that. Maybe he wants to get booked on Letterman doing stupid people tricks. I think he is hurting himself in more ways than one.
