Here's my method for the Ungimmicked Light Bulb Change. 1. Twist the bulb (Asher) 2. Switch the bulb (I use a thumb tip) 3. Repeat step 1 and you're done Create your own patter. #3 What's a Sleight Bulb? Can you post a link? And a review? |

I think what I would enjoy to see, if a real magician would have to change a lightbulb, is a guy who would:
- pull a huge ladder out of a small case, - would climb on it alone, using balance management, in order to get on the top of it (without any difficulties, but only being natural, of course), - make the ladder stand on only one of its "feet" and pivot very quickly (like a twister in a cartoon) in order to unscrew the burnt bulb, - make a magic pass over the bulb (yes, he doesn't need his hands to stand on balance) and have it "lighting on" in his hands, - Screw it, while already lit, with the same procedure as the unscrewing, - Slide off the ladder, - put the ladder away in his bag. If a magician would need more than himself to switch a lightbulb and not do it impromptu, I would certainly not be interested. |

None.
Why? No lightbulb necessary. Why? Becuase the magician is too busy uttering clever patter before he starts the screwing in of said lightbulb. Afterall it took a month to come up with the poetic patter and bygod somebody's going to hear it. Besides, It's a geat story (*snort*). It's the first patter they came up with so it must be good. Very clever and entertaining, especially when told in the magician's best used-car-salesman accent; complete with winking, fake smiles, nudges, and phony laughs. Boy, what a performance!!! The magician never realizes that the spectators could not be less interested in their story trick, are pretty much weirded out by the guy, just wanted to see their dinner while they ate, and are now leaving the restaurant in a huff.

Mark Wilson's "Self Changing Lightbulb" Illusion
Source: Mark Wilson's Incomplete, Unreleased Volume of the Encyclopedia of Magic Page: 5,462 Effect: Perfect for the parlour setting. A woman spectator sits in an easy chair. The performer, played by her husband will be sitting idly at one end of the couch, reading a newspaper. The wife/spectator may offer a few comments regarding how her day went, With a startling "FLASH", the bulb in a nearby table lamp burns out with an unexpected, and dramatic report. The performer pretends to ignore the burnt out bulb in the usual husbandly manner, and slowly slides to the far end of the sofa near another, adequate light source. In a few moments, the wife/spectator will grow impatient, likely clearing her throat, sighing, and perhaps nudging the performer's shins. At this point, the performer will raise the newspaper higher, obscuring the wife AND burnt out bulb from his view. Keeping himself concealed behind the newspaper, eventually the room will suddenly and unexpectedly fill with light once again. When the performer lowers the newspaper, the faulty light will have been replaced with a new, working bulb untouched by him during the entire performance. Method: This is largely a self-working trick, based loosely upon the Self-Washing Laundry effect. The trick here is for the performer to condition himself to ignore the problem. Younger, more recently married performers will find this difficult, and should enlist the council of more seasoned men in the nuances of Problem Postponement. Notes: Be advised that the spectators rarely seem to appreciate this illusion, as spectacular as it might seem to us. Also remember to sprinkle these performances cautiously throughout your repetoire. Combining effects like this with say, the "Self-Washing Dishes" or "Manifest Grocery" can wear thin on an audience and, if not performed with due care, might result in an accidental summoning of the "Attorney Apparition" which is far more costly than a light bulb. ========================================== Regards, -jjg |
