Hey guys,
I've been doing magic for a long time however I haven't been performing for the last three years because I've been in school and trying to focus on getting my degree. I just was offered a gig for a New Years party. It would probably be Strolling for children and adults. I have a large selection of props & routines that I know and could perform without a problem. I'm wondering what do you guys suggest that I bring to perform. I'm just curious as to any current trends in what people like to see or what you find works well. Thanks in advance... -jlareau

This is a tough one as the performance time needs to be clearly defined. Otherwise on New Years they will expect you to go for hours.

Although I can tell you for sure to get D'Lite, as that is going to be a crowd pleaser. Regardless of that, though, what are the vital stats of the party?

Do what you do well. They are paying you to be entertained. It has never mattered to layman what is in "vogue" to a bunch of magicians. they just want to be entertained.
You have to give it away to keep it.

Take what ever you can carry in your pockets and resets fast and easy. You do not want to be going to your cast every two minutes to reset or grab a new prop. Here is what I carry on myself:
Cards Business cards coins(13-20 total)(Jim Pace fan can you tell) Rope for Prfos. Nightmare Jumbo coin(5") Silk Rubberbands(not around my wrist)(Place them on the card box, it is way less tacky) Sharpie marker D'lites are good and I keep one in my case. I also keep sponges and scissors in my case. Just in case. Corey B. |

I have not recieved a reply on the details of the party. I was just asked if I would be interested in perfroming and they said they would get back to me with details.
Here's what I'm thinking... -Ring flight -ITR -Pen Through Anything -Sponge balls -Raven -Hot Rod -Cards: 1 Reg "654" stacked deck, Hollow, Eye Exam, 1 Deck for torn and restored using Interseccor, 1 prediction packet w/ assortment of cards I can switch in for various effects. -TT Streamer I am not a fan of D'light. I purchased the double set with video and within 1 day the gimmick came loose and fell out of both. Nedless to say I think it lacks in quality. Also I have seen a lot of 'Ravers' in this area use them as glow sticks when they dance. Which I find completely annoying. However, in this area I think the secret is out about D'light because dance clubs are selling them to their customers. Gotta love capitalism. Any suggestions on additions / deletions to the above list? Also can anyone suggest a better sponge ball routine. The one I use is pretty LAME. Thanks for your help guys. -jlareau :bluebikes:

Cut and restored rope.
linking pins. 1-5 billswitch. Any coin/currency effects. get the hampton video Amazing tricks with money. (My buddies and I voted Dave's wife Doty, the worlds greatest shill). Effects that happen in the specs hands. Switch the streamer for a 12" silk. (too hard to load for a reset).

Jonathan,
I am familiar with torn and restored, but do not understand what you mean by using intersessor? I did a search in all the normal places and can't find any references to it. I assume its just a different method. Any sources? Thanks |

Burk - Gaeton Bloom sells the Intercessor - it is a device for torn-and-restored card withour corner switches. Very fun. Very good.

I agree about the D'Lite. It is neat eye candy, but I find alot of people are familiar with something similar.
Plus, I have never seen a good routine with a D'lite.

Just got a call back from this lady. Now instead of stolling she wants me to promote this event. Apparently she wants me to be at a kiosk in the middle of a mall doing stuff as people walk by. This is a lot more difficut than it sounds.
First I need to grab their attention. Then I need to promote the event at the same time grabbing the attention of the next batch of people to walk by. I need to come up with ATTENTION GRABBING, virtually ANGLE PROOF routines that can INSTANTLY RESET. I figure if I get 3-5 routines and cycle through them handing out flyers after each one that should do well. I don't know if I will be able to use flash products. Any idea's? HELP! -jlareau :bluebikes:

Slightly off topic, but on Saturday night I went to my regular restaurant gig with (only!):
one deck of cards, a TT and Silk, Prof's Nightmare ropes, elastic bands (round my wrist!), 3 half dollars (plus shell and copper/silver coin). Four sponge balls. I managed to get two hours out of this stuff! |

Jlareau, Ok calm down, let's think this thing through, from the begining.
1.The time duration of event. If its going to be long, you will be better off building short sets(15-25 min each) and having them scripted in the order of performance. Two reasons here, the first being you will need to perform some of the effects multiple times and you want to space them far enough apart that the specs standing around won't notice. Also with small breaks you allow a new group to form each time. Second you will need flowing patter that will last a long time and its easier to build patter for a set and repeat it with a gap of time and different spectators. 2. You are going to need slightly larger props to cover a slightly larger audience. Look over the list I suggested for MagicTom. 3. List all of the effects that you perfom flawlessly on paper. But only your best. Then break them into a few groups. 4.You work pasteboards already. Use them for filler to stretch each set to the right time. Go and buy some of the decks with the extra large indices so they are easy to see at a short distance. Rope, Silks. check both forums. Linking ropes. A good short routine and around $5 for a cheap set, Or $20 for a top of the line. Egg bag. Cut and restored rope. Rope and ring (cheap ellis ring from daytona $5, throw away the book that comes with it) Needle thru Balloon (be careful the needle is real, and you should buy one of the holders, in clear or wand style as they contain the gimmick and make it easy) Silk to egg w/yolk Switch/or gimmck. Check the stage magic sections from a couple dealers and look for smaller effects. 5. You are both entertaining and promoting so this takes some of the heat off, as you can stop to promote at any time. Get down to your local shop and explain whats going on, and that you need effects that have a short learning curve, and explain your angle concerns and any other issues. They should be able to gather up a half dozen ideas and save you some time. Pick out the ones you think are best from what they show you. If you like em the spectators will love em. Always pick your effects by seeing them demonstrated and Before you know how they are done. Check MagicToms thread, and others for ideas.
